4.0 out of 5 stars a fine collection, September 4, 2008

This review is from: Basque Legendes (Paperback)
This is a fine collection of legends and folktales from the Basque country gathered in the late 1800's. It is arranged in chronological order, from the most traditional through Rapunzel-type stories to obvious Christianized tales, though due to political conditions at the time, the stories come only from the French-speaking areas.
The stories are compared to folktales from other parts of Europe, and the compiler only occasionally puts his quaint Victorian gloss on them. All in all, well worth a read for anyone interested in Basque culture.
