Great How-To for Deer Hair Bass Flies,
By Lady Drue (Lake Whitney, TX United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bass Bug Basics: Simple Techniques for Tying Deer-Hair Flies (Fly-Tying) (Paperback)
I am new to fly tying. I fell in love with fly fishing when a friend began teaching us the technique for a fishing trip to Colorado. I live in Texas where trout are very scarce, but bass flourish here and love flies. I am an old crafter and I wanted a specific hands-on book to teach me fly tying for bass. I got this book as a gift from my Amazon wish list. I immediately read this informative book from cover to cover. Bass Bug Basics is highly readable plus it has easy to follow step-by-step directions with pictures that clearly illustrate each technique (highly important to those of us trying to learn this new craft). It is a beautiful book that would make for an interesting table topper, but mine stays busy at the workbench. I found it accessible to the new tier (me), but think the specific deer hair tying instructions would be valuable to an advanced tier who wanted to expand their techniques. Good fishing.

This is THE Book.,
By Bill P. "Fly Fishin' Fool" (Nebraska, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bass Bug Basics: Simple Techniques for Tying Deer-Hair Flies (Fly-Tying) (Paperback)
Before I bought this book, I was scared to tie with deer hair.
After I read it, I was showing off bugs at the next fly club meeting. A couple months after that, I was asked to be a FEATURED tyer at the club. (I tied a stacked hair frog in 4 colors including stripes and a white belly) Mr Likakis walks you through every technique. Just follow along and be prepared to make a mess. He makes things much simpler than other tyers (like Chris Helm).

I purchased this book roughly about a month ago because I loved tying but absolutely hated deer hair. The book starts off with just telling the very basic method of spinning and then takes you right into tying so great flies. I was through the book within the first two weeks. I highly recommend this book rather your a fanatic tier like me or a beginner.

Overall a very good book on spinning deer hair to nake Bass bugs. I highly recommend it for the serious hair spinners and thread wrappers who make their own bugs to fish for Bass with.

Enjoyed reading the book and the techniques for tying deer hair flies were simple enough. It would have been a nice addition if the pictures were in color. This book along with Skip's, will have you tying hair flies in no time.
