If you are adverse to the release of a "greatest hits" package at the end of an artist's contract with a record company, then this collection will draw immediate ire.
Perhaps best for new listeners wanting to check out Stanley Clarke's "Sony" years through major sign posts on the lengthy road - and those wishing to complete the discography - this release coincided with his switch to a new label. There are no enticing alternative takes or rare live recordings snatched from the vaults, but it is a solid short story on Clarke's intriguing vision when he bounced from jazz to rock-infused fusion that often found its way onto FM radio playlists nationwide.
Arguably the most gifted bassist of his generation, this is a satisfying syllabus that leaves one with a few bucks in the pocket for some school days on the various studio and live releases from Clarke's incredible career.
