John Barrett is putting out music well beyond his ripe young age of early twenties? This is their sophomore effort (debut disc GB City is amazing), and you should get both albums, and see these guys live, as they rock super hard on disc or live. Why is it critical acclaim doesn't always equate to putting bank in the pockets of those who truly are extremely talented, hard working, and deserving of a music "career"?

Garage-rock has had a bit of a resurgence in the past few years, with artists like Thee Oh Sees and Ty Segall starting to gain some attention beyond the vinyl-only music geek crowd, and while Bass Drum of Death--aka Mississippi's John Barrett, now the sole member besides touring-only musicians--is similar in some ways to those acts, he plays more of a straight-up, punk-fueled garage, mostly bypassing the aforementioned's psychedelic tendencies for an all-out attack. In some ways the music here recalls the late Jay Reatard's work, but Barrett has more of a melodic touch to his brand of blistering, scuzzy punk.

"Such a Bore" and first single "Shattered Me" are perfect examples, with their repetitive, propulsive drums backing dirty and fuzzed-out, surf-infused riffs that are both noisy and melodies-rich, the latter quality being what separates him from Reatard imo. It's immediately obvious that the songs here aren't just carbon-copies of Barrett's garage-punk forbears and peers, as he's definitely got his own unique songwriting style, with a wide range of influences--from surf ("Such a Bore"), to Seattle grunge ("I Wanna Be Forgotten"), to blues ("Fine Lies"), to the modern garage-punk of Segall and Thee Oh Sees ("No Demon"), to old-school punk ("Shattered Me"), to the proto-punk of The Stooges and MC5 ("Bad Reputation")--all with great hooks, and all while sounding consistently fresh throughout. And that's just the album's first half. It's a big step up from BDOD's still-quite-good 2011 debut, 'GB City.'

It's also an excellent portent of things to come from Barrett, as the huge leap in songwriting here means that a similar jump next time could mean we have a future garage classic lying in wait, even if he's not *quite* there yet.

This is my go to band now when I need loud and hard. I can listen to the entire album instead of picking one or two that are good for a playlist.

This is the 2nd full album from BDoD. I really liked this album. They seem to have expanded their sound a bit. In this installment they have moved past the really basic garage style and added a different sound. Shuffled in some more Pop and cleaned up the sound. In my opinion, this is the best BDoD album so far.

I'm a sucker for good authentic garage rock, and Bass Drum of Death more than delivers. With a sound that reminds me of the Them classic "GLORIA" and all of the best '60s garage rock and lyrics, harmonies, and musical sensibilities reminiscent of "Surfer Rosa"-era Pixies, this disc is a winner!

Bass Drum of Death rules. Currently on tour with equally ruling Unknown Mortal Orchestra. See them or regret it forever. Oh yeah, buy this album too.
