Book Description

August 19, 1994
"The author, unlike snootier fly rod types, is very eclectic in his bass fishing background, arriving at the fly rod via bait, baitcasting and spinning tackle, and (he) absolutely embraces whatever innovations have made the bass fisherman more knowledgeable or effective."--"Gray's Sporting Journal."

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This is a revised edition of the author's Fly-Rodding for Bass (1976). Since the publication of the first edition, bass fishing tackle hasn't changed much, but bass habitat has increased greatly while wild trout habitat has declined. Livingston encourages fly fishers to try bass for opportunity and pleasure. He suggests that spincasters will find it cheaper and easier but claims that the best reason for using a fly rod "is that it will at times catch more fish." Livingston knows his topic and writes clearly about tackle and gear, lures and presentation, bass habitat and behavior, and the varied methods of casting. The result should appeal to both fly fishing purists and down-home bassers. The earlier edition remains useful, and the topic fits the scope of public library collections throughout the country. For large sports collections.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book for the beginner or the expert., October 13, 1998
This review is from: Bass on the Fly (Paperback)
A. D. Livingston's writing style informs, entertains, and provides insight into this form of fly fishing. Unlike other books on the subject, the book doesn't have that feel of being a sales tool for a company's products. From basic casting to fly selection, Livingston covers all aspects of using the fly rod for bass. He is an accomplished fisherman and his superb knowledge of the species provides very educational reading. My only complaint about the book is that it was originally written 20 years ago. He gives opinions and recommendations on matters that are somewhat dated. However, I still highly recommend this book because of A. D.'s style. As you read, his personality jumps out of the words, making you feel like he is in the room talking to you. You will find yourself smiling, wishing you could have this guy over for dinner sometime, just to hear more of his stories and opinions.

This review is from: Bass on the Fly (Paperback)
This book is great. It covers top water angling, mid water angling as well as deep water angling with the fly. The tone of the writer is laid back and yet so full of detail. I strongly recommend it to anyone who likes to pursue bass on the fly.
