Bassmasters 2000 takes virtual anglers to highly detailed re-creations of the same lakes that are on the Bassmaster tournament circuit. Presented in a television-style format, the game features angling legends Shaw Grigsby and Roland Martin providing up-to-the-moment commentary and expert advice. Off the lake, players can visit a virtual tackle shop to upgrade bait and equipment, and the create-an-angler mode lets players choose a distinct personality. A split-screen, two-player mode offers a witness to confirm or deny that inevitable tale about the big one that got away. --Eric Twelker

This game is great. If you like to fish in the real world this game is for you. If you know how to fish and apply the same techniques to the game you'll have fun. This game though isn't for non-fisherman because they will find it too tough.

Bass Masters 2000 is a well designed and beautiful game, but it has a few problems. The 2 player mode only lets you fish head-to-head. It would be great to have the option to allow both anglers to fish off the same boat. The fishfinders are difficult to read and the manual offers no tips on how to read them. On 2 player mode the fishfinder disappears. Also, you begin with 3 lakes to fish on and only one is worth the time. Lake Shasta is a huge bottomless pit and all the fish hang out at low depths where the fish are impossible to see and where it takes your lure way too much time to reach. Much of the game is like that. And the underwater cam only lets you view around you, not below you or down in the depths, so casting in deep water (where the fish are) is a crap shoot. These lakes have very few fish in them which means you waste your whole day cruising in the boat looking for fish which eats up all your time. Here's a tip though -- play two player mode and the time cannot run out while you are cruising in your boat because they can't penalize the other player's time while he's fishing. I know they are going for realism but I'm a gamer and don't have the time to waste on waiting. That's why I'm virtual fishing instead of real fishing. By the time you've hooked a couple of small fish the time limit is up and you have to start over. The underwater cam is great, but when objects are in your line of view you lose the ability to see everything except that object. And I already mentioned it's limited view range. The developers of this game could have had the foresight to cater to a less patient gamer audience and sacrifice a bit of realism in the name of a higher replay value. True fishers with fishing knowledge will find this game outstanding but the rest of us want some action. This game is good but not great. Bass Masters 2001 should be much better if they listen to comments like these. Enjoy and happy fishing!

Lots of fishing games are out for lots PSX and PC but this is only the second one out for the N64. Having played both, Bass Masters 2000 is far and away the better of the two. The controls make sense. There are arcade modes, four full lakes, casting competitions, speed fishing and tournaments. This is a great game. It's the only fishing you need on the N64.
