Book Description

May 1995 0582060923 978-0582060920 1st
This major work is the most radical reinterpretation of the subject for fifty years. Hicks argues that Bastard Feudalism was far more complex - and positive in its effects - than previous accounts have suggested. A major contribution to historical debate which revolutionises our view of late medieval society.

4.0 out of 5 stars a lively read about feudalism, September 1, 2007
This review is from: Bastard Feudalism (Medieval World) (Paperback)
Hicks traces bastard feudalism back intricately into over a century before it was supposed to have started in England. He describes overlapping allegiances, to one's lord and to one's king, that were present since the Norman invasion, if not actually predating it.

We also get a good relating of how the nobility lived under this bastard feudalism. A life of relative ease, by exploiting the hapless peasants. Plus, it is shown how people could rise above the station that they were born into. Along with how the towns adapted to and modified feudalism, based on the skilled craftsmen and other gentry present in those towns.

Whether or not you accept Hicks' contentions about feudalism, his book is still a lively read about how it functioned.
