Book Description

April 12, 2004

Like many other young American men during the depression-era 1930s, Gene Boyt entered Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Civilian Conservation Corps. Later, after receiving an ROTC commission in the Army Engineers and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the Missouri School of Mines, Boyt joined the Allied forces in the Pacific Theater.

While building runways and infrastructure in the Philippines in 1941, Boyt enjoyed the regal life of an American officer stationed in a tropical paradise--but not for long. When the United States surrendered the Philippines to Japan in April 1942, Boyt became a prisoner of war, suffering unthinkable deprivation and brutality at the hands of the ruthless Japanese guards.

One of the last accounts to come from a Bataan survivor, Boyt’s story details the infamous Bataan Death March and his subsequent forty-two months in Japanese internment camps. In this fast-paced narrative, Boyt’s voice conveys the quiet courage of the generation of men who fought and won history’s greatest armed conflict.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Former Corps of Engineers officer Boyt (1917-2003) and the family friend who helped him transcribe his story offer a cogent account of surviving the Depression and four years as a Japanese POW. From a family impoverished by the father's desertion as well as the economy, Boyt got to college through the Civilian Conservation Corps, and from college into the army. Arriving in the Philippines five months before war broke out, Boyt was captured on Bataan and survived the Death March and several camps in the Philippines. Shipped to Japan, where survival was, if not easier, at least less impossible, he was liberated in 1945 to embark on a successful career as a civil engineer. His is a straightforward tale, featuring understated but vivid portraits of helpers and hinderers, clear consciousness of how little can stand between life and death, and a balanced attitude toward the many vices and occasional virtues of his captors. Likely to be one of the last Bataan survivor's narratives, this one definitely belongs in Pacific war collections. Roland Green

5.0 out of 5 stars Bataan: A Survivor's Story, March 19, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bataan: A Survivor's Story (Hardcover)
Boyt States that he wrote this book for 2 reasons: "First, I hope to contribute to a more complete history of both the Bataan Death March and the broader POW experience. Second, I feel compelled to bring my story to later generations of Americans." The author succeeds on both counts. This is an easily read, true, and impactful story that I found hard to put down. It puts into context the suffering endured by those who survived, and the many who died, during the Death March and being held as POW's by the Japanese in WWII. The discriptions are vivid including the heroric actions of the Philippeno people prior to and during the struggle. They also suffered greatly. I'm glad I added this book to my library.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully Written Account of the Atrocities of WWII, July 20, 2004
This review is from: Bataan: A Survivor's Story (Hardcover)
The Bataan Death March left very few survivors, but the ones it did leave, like this author, were strong, brave heroes! The author shares the heartaches of war along with the joys of returning home to family and friends whose prayers were answered. I'm so glad I have this book, it is a genuine treasure trove of inspiration! God bless the memory of every man, woman, and child who suffered the horrors of World War II. We are indebted to them for their wisdom and their courage.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story!, April 21, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Bataan: A Survivor's Story (Hardcover)
The book was well written and kept my attention - it was hard to put down! Everyone in my family read the book and it generated many conversations about family members who served in World War II, human nature, and Mr. Boyt's incredible will to live. My son used this book for a class assignment and all of the kids enjoyed the story - it gave an indepth look at just one of many heros who served in World War II. I highly recommend this book.
