Exellent book for Hx taking and physical exam!!!,
By jasdoit92 (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination And History Taking (9th Edition) (Hardcover)
There are lots of books out there now for Med students or anyone involved in the medical field to learn about proper Hx taking and physical exam. But clearly this book stands out. Now in it's 9th ed, it comes also with a CD containing videos demonstrating those PE techniques. I'm already done with my residency and finished Med school about a decade ago, but was 'forced' to buy this new edition as I would be teaching Med students Hx taking and Physical diagnosis.I needed to refresh all of those stuff that I learned before, and with this book it made everything easy. Proper techniques of physical examination were clearly described and most of them are illustrated well. The book also shows expected normal findings, and associate those abnormal findings with certain diseases and pathology that they can be seen.
I strongly recomned this book to those who really wanted to learn the proper, correct way of physical examination. It's well worth it-something you'll use throughout your career (like the Dubin book for EKGs).

it's a shame there isn't a better PE book out there. my school required that i get the 9th edition, promising that all the errors of the 8th edition were corrected in the 9th.
let me just start by saying the GLOSSARY in the back of the BOOK hasn't been updated from the last edition. you need to contact the publisher just to get a copy of the correct page numbers. i'll leave you with this: i suggest a supplement: "Degowins" PE. it's organized 1000-times better and doesn't weigh a ton. truth about bates' is, they try to make things seem SO simple, but in medicine there is rarely only ONE answer. because it's the only one out there of its kind (it spells out step-by-step procedures to the PE) it's an essential, but it's NOT the bible to PE; get yourself an adjunct text. DeGowin's Diagnostic Examination

Well the book is beautiful and extremely well put together based on logical organization but I have put it to the test utilizing it in my hospital rotations as a step by step guide on what I am looking for and what to write down doing the physical examination and I keep on getting battered by the superior physicians. They always state that something is missing and what they say is missing makes perfect logical sense. It is not necessarily that they are attempting to make me look bad. The book is lacking some terminology and my best assessment is that it is not sufficiently thorough. I am on Amazon again to look for another book.

Not worth the money for a new edition,
By Dorothy Oz (Orange County, CA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination And History Taking (9th Edition) (Hardcover)
I have the 1974 version of this book, which obviously is too old for today's standards, but has all the basics for PE and history taking. This edition, while it has some really nice photos in comparison to the '74 version's hand-sketched drawings, still has some of the original hand-sketched drawings in it! The index does not match up with the text, so I'm wondering if the index is from a previous edition? I found this very frustrating when doing my homework and nearly impossible to find information for my take home exam for my assessment class.
I wouldn't spend the money. If I had known, I would have returned the book when it was new. My teacher suggested Health Assessment & Physical Examination by Mary Ellen Zator Estes, so I'm looking into buying that one for reference.

Bates' is the a very good source for information on physical exam and history taking. It provides clinical explanations for things such as systolic murmurs and heart sounds.

Index Incorrect,

This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination And History Taking (9th Edition) (Hardcover)
The index in the version I have is completely inaccurate. What's more, to obtain errata you're required to enter a code on the publisher's website. This code is not stamped on the book but is on the packaging which I unfortunately threw away before I noticed the index was completely inaccurate.
Save yourself the headache and get a different version.

I'm in acupuncture school and when we do apply this book, it's really beneficial. Though I didn't listen whether or not it had heart beat sound clips, I think that would very useful. Laysout things pretty well...
