3.0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful for first year
I bought this for first year medical school and wish I hadn't. In my opinion, it is lacking in organization and is full of general nonspecific information that adds very little to a practical approach to the PE and Hx. There are much better options for history especially: "The Patient History: Evidence Based Approach." For close to $100 dollars, I expected a lot...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great buy for any health professional student, September 17, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 10th Edition (Hardcover)
Bates has wonderfully detailed and specific descriptions of each system exam as well as descriptions on history taking, clinical reasoning, behavior and mental status. Special sections include infants/children, pregnant women and older adults. Within each chapter there is a wonderful overview of the system including anatomy and physiology which transitions nicely into descriptions of abnormal findings and their clinical significance. This book does not simply cover how to perform a physical exam but also includes a mini medicine review.

4.0 out of 5 stars required for my class, May 26, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 10th Edition (Hardcover)
The text was required for class. The CD is very clear and simple information, for a beginning practitioner in physical assessment. The book has some interesting color slides for differential diagnosis. It is pricey, but the Amazon price was better than others.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bates Physical Examination Guide, November 21, 2010

The format is easy to follow but I think the older editions are just as comprehensive without spending the additional money.

5.0 out of 5 stars RRT, RN, February 20, 2009
This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 10th Edition (Hardcover)
I found this an extremely "Patient Centered" text. The exam and how it is presented focuses on the "Patients Concerns", like modesty, warm room, time, and concern. The DVD gave a brief review. I wish more time had been on the Eye exam, maybe next time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not very helpful for first year, October 15, 2011

I bought this for first year medical school and wish I hadn't. In my opinion, it is lacking in organization and is full of general nonspecific information that adds very little to a practical approach to the PE and Hx. There are much better options for history especially: "The Patient History: Evidence Based Approach." For close to $100 dollars, I expected a lot more. I have stopped using this book and strongly recommend that you at least look through it in your library before purchasing.
It does contain some good images and PE techniques, but I've learned more from class and youtube demonstrations than I learned from this book. It may be the authoritative guide, but that does not mean it will be useful to you.

This book is a wealth of information.
I'm in Chiropractic college and this is a must have book.
It lists everything in detail and is pretty easy to go through.

I would suggest it for any profession that needs a physical examination reference book.
Bates is a no brainer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love this!, September 29, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Bates' Guide to Physical Examination and History Taking, 10th Edition (Hardcover)
This book is a comprehensive guide on how to do a physical examination. I love the way the book also explains about the purpose of an exam. I was so happy with my purchase that I also bought a handbook guide of the book from the same author that is of a newer edition though.
