    These boots fit very comfortably.

In fact, we were told to turn all our boots back in and exchange them for a non-RAT pair because of quality control issues during the manufacture of this product.

Let me start off by saying that these are probably the most comfortable boots I have ever worn. Light, breathable, feel good on your feet. That being said be very careful with this purchase. If these boots are part of the same batch that was ordered for Marines deploying to Afghanistan, they will fall apart in a couple of months if not sooner. How do I know this? Because I am currently the proud owner of a pair of Bates RAT boots that were issued to me prior to my deployment and are now falling apart. The sole is coming off. The stitching is disintegrating. In fact, we were told to turn all our boots back in and exchange them for a non-RAT pair because of quality control issues during the manufacture of this product. There were about 120,000 boots ordered from Bates when the defect was caught. Bates only delivered about 70,000. That means there are 50,000 defective boots floating around the market right now. The fact that these boots are so heavily discounted and are "factory seconds" leads me to believe that these could be part of that same batch. That being said, if you only need boots for a month and are looking at wearing comfortable boots for that month, go with these. Otherwise either wait until Bates decides that Marines in Afghanistan rate boots that can actually stay together for more than a month or shell out some cash and go with the RAT boots made by Danner.

As an owner of both the Bates and Danner versions of the RAT boot, I can tell you the difference in quality is obvious. The Bates were comfortable, but I experienced sole separation within two weeks. I have since switched to the Danner's, and was able to compare the two brands side by side. The edges are cut and finished cleaner on the Danner's, and the uppers don't crumple as much as they do on the Bates. I have been giving my Danner boots hell everyday for six months now, and they are holding up great. You definitely get what you pay for.

These boots were rejected by The Marines for latent defects, stay clear of this product if you are a Marine, they are not authorized for wear, plus the boots will fall apart on you.

As the other reviewers have pointed out, Bates RAT boots are no longer USMC issue. Indeed, it is my understanding that Bates lost the contract to Danner because of the quality control issues already mentioned above. That said, I agree with the others that these are very comfortable boots. In fact, they are way more comfortable than my Danner Descenders, although the Bates RAT boots feel somewhat heavier. They are clearly built on a wider last, and are roomy enough for my orthotics without having to remove the inner sole. Width is a complaint I have with Danners as I find even their EE fitting too narrow for my wide feet.

I have not, as yet, worn the RAT boots on rough terrain, so I cannot comment on their ability to soak up punishment. They look fine and I believe (based on the assurances of the supplier) that I did not get on of the 50,000 pairs of unused substandard boots that were rejected by the Marines. From my research, it seems that Bates actually made a whole bunch of RAT boots where they had sorted out the quality issues, but lost the USMC contract anyway.

So how do you tell if you are getting good boots or seconds? I am not aware of any way you can tell just by looking at the boots, so it seems that we will have to wait and see. If, however, your supplier is reputable (mine is a national supplier with a lot to lose), then you are entitled to a warranty claim, including possible refund, if the boots were sold to you as 'first quality' but turn out to be 'seconds'. If the other reviewers are correct, then you will know soon enough as your boots will either survive their first dose of punishment, or they will fall apart.

I will let you know how mine go after I put some miles on them and it would be good to hear from others who also purchased the Bates RAT boots. BTW, I got mine reasonably cheaply, so I have my fingers crossed.

Although these boots were recalled by the military for defects in manufacturing, and Bates lost the contract to provide them to USMC, this is my SECOND purchase of them. The first was from another vendor whom had them way cheaper than here. IF you can find them, and if they're <$100, BUY a pair. Just do NOT buy size 10.5 Wide (or EW), as that's MY size & I'm looking to buy another pair. These are the most comfortable boots I've EVER worn. For those that complain how difficult they are to put on, I strongly discourage any cutting of the tongue. Just unlace the top two (2) speed lace lugs & try that. They're easy to re-lace, tighten & tie. I've not had ANY problem with sole separation, etc. Again, these boots are a bargain at. <$100. BUY THEM, IF you can still find them. They're disappearing, FAST.
