They should stick with their market niche.

The Tora Bora boot rubber lasts opened on inside toe areas on both boots and permits water to enter the boots.

I've never in my life seen such shoddy workmanship on such an expensive product.

I have used these boots on a daily basis here in Afghanistan. They are easy to break-in and are comfortable to wear on a 18-20 hour basis. They are warm and usually provide great ankle support. I have used these boots for ~90 days here in Afghanistan. The boots are failing under tough conditions.

The BATES Tora Bora boots have two major problems:
    1. The velco tab holding the ancillary lace cover rubs though the sock and is abrasive to the leg. I taped over the velco to remedy the shortcoming.

    2. The Tora Bora boot rubber lasts opened on inside toe areas on both boots and permits water to enter the boots. The boots are not durable and cannot function in rough terrain.

I cannot recommend these Bates Tora Bora boots for use in rough terrain. I am disappointed as I really liked the boot until the rubber lasts failed. These Bates boots did not meet my expectations.

I just bought these and tried them on and found that the mechanism that holds the laces in gives way when you put up on the laces. Looking closely at it, the mechanism is just a thin plastic rod like you'd see on a $5 watch band. Convinced that I must have received a counterfeit product, I called the company that makes the boot and the one who sold it and both ensure me that this is the actual boot. I've never in my life seen such shoddy workmanship on such an expensive product. Needless to say, I'll be sending these back immediately.

These boots as well as several other Bates "alpine" class boots are obviously intended to compete with the (superior) Danner alpine type boots. Unfortunately, Bates just doesn't have the long term experience making boots in this caliber and price class. They should stick with their market niche.

Don't get me wrong... I own several Bates products and they are fine for everyday "kick-around" boots, and usually quite comfortable and reasonably priced. Not sure why they are trying to delve into the serious (and pricey) trail boot market. It's only giving them a bad name because people are spending a LOT of money on these expecting a serious product. What they're getting is products that are falling apart.
