If you are a DC and/or comic book fan in general and you haven't been keeping up with Batman '66 you are missing one of the coolest most offbeat series ever produced. Jeff Parker's attempt to capture the vibe of the old Batman series from the 60's is so brilliant that the Adam West Batman may now be my favorite Batman. I really hope Batman '66 gets to join the official DC multiverse and we see a crossover with the Earth 1 Batman because that would be perhaps the greatest team up ever. I usually try to keep my geek meter tempered but Batman '66 is the kind of series that pushes it into the red.

In the first story, Bookworm (a villain from the old show), steals the city's giant checkbook used for giving checks to worthy causes. These are the kinds of checks one might receive when winning a golf tournament. The city cannot stop payment on all giant checks because then it would stop payment on all those deserving causes like the widows and orphans fund so it's up to Batman to retrieve the giant checkbook. If you're not chuckling at my description it's because I'm failing to describe it correctly because the concept is hilarious. Anyone who's not completely naïve knows that those giant checks are just for show rather than actual checks but not in the world of Batman '66. Everything is light and corny but in the best way possible. If someone told me that a series would be produced based on the Adam West Batman and I would love it I wouldn't believe it could be true but it is.

I'm giving volume two a perfect five stars but the stories aren't uniformly perfect. King Tut gets featured on the cover but that was probably my least favorite story. It featured time travel which seemed out of tune with the old television program.

BATMAN '66 VOLUME 1 was a wickedly fun book with great guest villains. You had stories involving Riddler, Penguin, Joker, Catwoman, Mr. Freeze, Egghead and Mad Hatter.
BATMAN '66 VOLUME 2 is not as much fun because of the roster of decidedly lesser quality villains. In this volume we get Bookworm, Zelda the Great, Shame, Olga, King Tut (I confess a personal favorite) and Alfred's twin brother (!?!). On the plus side there IS a 6 page back-up tale featuring the Joker and a really good Mr. Freeze story. Riddler is also in the book but he is only a minor character in the False-Face story.
If you only have enough money to buy one of the two volumes, I would DEFINITELY go for the far superior Vol. 1.

I think I enjoyed this collection of the Batman '66 series more than I expected because it was such an enjoyable contrast to the current dark and intense version of The Batman. Goofy, silly and light as a feather, these stories are meant to evoke and continue the wacky Batman series that captured the nation's imagination for a few brief years in the mid-60's (and to some, did years of harm to the perception of comics and comics fans).
The art varies widely in quality and the lame villains created solely for the series predominate, but the overall tone of fun conquers all. For many moments I was transported back to the second-grader who played Batman and Robin during recess the day after each episode's broadcast and for this I thank the good folks at DC comics.

Perfect all ages book. Writing that isn't cluttered, art that is varied and fresh, and characters that are beloved. Among the interesting art, I must point out how eye-catching the Mike Allred art is. He produces the covers for this book, and his art has never been more suited to a project, except perhaps for Madman, his creator-owned character (also worth checking out for it's fun and wacky vibe).
