This review is from: batman brave and the bold figure (Toy)
Mattel and Batman, Batman and Mattel - the toy company has been making Batman figures for well over a decade now and I believe Mattel has become quite familiar with the character and all his incarnations. The latest offering comes in the form of Batman from the new Cartoon Network series, "Batman: the Brave and the Bold." If you are unfamiliar with this series then I would highly recommend you track down the first season on DVD and be mesmerized by the witty and ingenious partnerships that take place in this awesome cartoon. In short, the cartoon is loosely based on the comic book series of the same name; it is fun, funny, action-packed, and has some of the best scripts of any series on television today. In each episode Batman is paired-up with any number of DC comic's superheroes (many of them are not very well known to the general audience) and then riotous action ensues. A must watch! The figure at hand is called "Battle Slam Batman" due to the accessory in which he is given. In reality this is series one's 'standard' Batman figure. He comes on a standard blister-card which features fantastic artwork on the card as well as the bubble. The graphics are bold and clean depictions of the character housed in the package. On the back of the card the tag phrase reads: "Team Up! Build Up! Save the Day!" and proceeds to show the other figures in the series and all of the accessories which can be shared between any of the characters. I like the smaller size of these cards too, this is really a great effort on Mattel's behalf. Upon getting him in your hand one thing you will immediately notice is the fact that most of the figures in this line have hexagonal shaped holes in their arms, legs, and backs and share the same sculpted body, or 'buck,' in order for Mattel to save tooling costs. But don't let that deter you from checking this figure out. Standing at about 5 inches, Batman has an awesome face sculpt which is ripped right from the cartoon and he features a sharp paint application. The colors used on this figure are bright and right in line with the series as a whole. Batman has eight points of articulation: hips, waist, elbows, shoulders, and neck. Not a ton of movement, but more than enough for Mattel's target demographic. While knee joints would have been great, I really appreciate this figure for what it is - a toy. It is a sturdy, well-built figure that kids will absolutely love and collectors will want just for the coolness factor. As mentioned above, Batman has one accessory, the miniature Battle Ram, a weapon that looks like a jack-hammer with a bat-shield on the front of it. It can be snapped into one of the previously mentioned hexagonal holes located on any of Batman's appendages, but other than play-value it really has no purpose. While this line of figures are far from perfect, they do accomplish what they set out to do: create a fun time for younger fans of the DC Universe. If you are a fan of the show and you want a Batman figure which looks like the one on screen, then look no further. More articulation and less holes in these figures would definitely be awesome, but taken for what they are, they really do begin to grow on you. I am a huge fan of the cartoon series and I've found Battle Slam Batman, as well as all the figures in the series to be worth every penny spent on them!
