Editorial Reviews

Jack Nicholson is the Joker, who emerged from a horrible accident as a maniacal criminal. Michael Keaton is the Caped Crusader, who emerged from a childhood trauma to become a masked crime-fighter. Kim Basinger is Vicki Vale, the talented photojournalist desired by both men. And Batman is the movie, the all-out spectacular directed by Tim Burton, set to songs by Prince and a music score by Danny Elfman, and an Academy Award winner* for Best Art Direction/Set Decoration (Anton Furst and Peter Young).

5.0 out of 5 stars true masterpiece! April 23, 2013
Tim Burton's 1989 classic is a must-see for Batman fans.
the blu-ray steelbook is a must-have for enthusiasts.

i can still remember going to see this movie in a jam-packed theater.
a true blockbuster, it was the top-grossing film in North America that year.
great acting, great story, great soundtrack, great movie.

Michael Keaton's Batman is dark, brooding, and tormented. i loved Keaton in Beetlejuice but didn't think he could pull this role off until i saw it for myself. Jack Nicholson was unforgettable as the Joker. Nicholson's joker is maniacal magic. not as dark as Ledger's (The Dark Night), but much more fun. Kim Bassinger is Vicki Vale, whose affections are pursued by both Batman and the Joker.

Prince's soundtrack is awesome. the score (Danny Elfman) is well done. the costumes are great and the set design won an Oscar. plus...all of Batman's "wonderful toys".

great special features (unchanged from the 20th anniversary release):

+ Commentary by Director Tim Burton
+ On the Set with Bob Kane
+ Legends of the Dark Knight: The History of Batman - The Comic Book Saga as Reinvented and Reintrepeted over Seven Decades
+ Shadows of the Bat: The Cinematic Saga of the Dark Knight Parts 1-3
+ The Road to Gotham City
+ The Gathering Storm
+ The Legend Reborn
+ Beyond Batman Documentary Gallery (6 Featurettes) - Visualizing Gotham: The Production Design of Batman / Building the Batmobile / Those Wonderful Toys: The Props and Gadgets of Batman / Designing the Batsuit / From Jack to the Joker / Nocturnal Overtures: The Music of Batman
+ 3 Prince Music Videos: Batdance, Partyman and Scandalous
+ Heroes and The Villains Profile Galleries
+ Batman: The Complete Robin Storyboard Sequence

4.0 out of 5 stars The Blu-Ray Transfer is Not Up To Par September 9, 2013
Verified Purchase
I have not seen Batman in at least 15 years. So, seeing it with "fresh eyes," I was surprised to find that the film stands up. The plot: A masked vigilante is taking back the dangerous streets of Gotham City, sparking a reporter and photojournalist to get the story. Meanwhile, when a criminal kingpin's "number one guy" has an accident in a chemical factory, The Clown Prince of Crime is born and gunning for Batman. I remember loving this film when I saw it at least five times in the theater. After having watched it, I still like it. It's not as great as when I was a teen but it is its own film with good performances from the three main actors (Nicholson, Keation and Basinger). The comparison of Nicholson's Joker vs. Ledger's is hard because, though this was a realistic take on Batman, it was a comic book brought to life as Nolan's films were "real life" with comic book elements. That being said, both performances are noteworthy and I love both of them. OK, onto the Blu-Ray... The transfer is decent but not very good. I'd expect that these films (Batman and Batman Returns) would warrant a more pristine presentation but nope. To me, it felt like watching a regular DVD upconverted to 1080P. It does have moments of image clarity, hinting at what might have been but mostly the image falls kind of flat. In any case, it does come with a large selection of extras including a commentary with Tim Burton (a holdover from the DVD) and all the Prince videos from the Batman soundtrack. So, with a lackluster transfer but a generous amount of extras, the Batman Steelbook is a decent deal at $9.99. But, if you see it for less, then grab it.

P.S. - My Steelbook came damaged with the disc loose in the case. I returned it and got a replacement but it was damaged the same way and, again, the disc was loose in the case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome May 27, 2013
By Mike
The steelbook exceeded my expectations. It looks phenomenal. The quality of the actual movie is about equal or a little less than equal to many of the transfers you would see for 1989 movies. Nothing to complain about, but wasn't stunned.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Item December 25, 2013

This Blu-ray is loaded with extras, and the steel case is very nice. The only thing I didn't like was there was not a booklet in the case. It is shown without one, but I assumed it was left out of the display.

The Batman Steelbook version makes a nice touch to the Batman collection. There is no artwork inside of the cover on this Steelbook, and the artwork on the back is not stellar either - it is just a semi-silhouetted half shot of Batman, and it is hard to make out any details. Plus the one I received does not close tight, and likes to pop open, not sure if I have a dud or that is indicative of others out there. I can’t complain too much, the price was right when I bought it at $9.99.

This Steelbook only comes with the Bluray disc, and no other discs like some multi-disc and special edition releases – so if you are expecting a DVD Video or Special Features disc, look elsewhere. This Steelbook is “movie only” which is what I prefer…

As far as the movie goes, I have liked this movie since the day it was released - - it gets a little cartoonish and corny in some parts, but Jack Nicholson fills in the gaps nicely with his antics and borderline "loonyisms" which are part of the role of course. I first purchased this movie in VHS when it first came out, and still have that tape, and for some reason never bought the DVD for this over the years. I saw it on Network TV (with all its commercial glory) once or twice, but never all the way through. So it has really been a while since I had seen it uninterrupted and all the way through, and definitely have not seen it in the quality the Blu Ray offers…

Watching it on Blu Ray was like watching the movie for the first time - there were all sorts of details, colors, scenes where I just did not recall or pick up on those subtleties from the VHS years ago, nor on the TV broadcast. It help I watched it on a 65" Panasonic Plasma, and since it is a "dark" movie, the blacks / contrast were nicely displayed.
