Yawn, good idea, not much to it though,

As the other reviews have stated, this is a very boring game. You are Batman or Robin set out to save Gotham from the Riddler and Twoface. An interesting thing to this game is that the buttons are set up like Mortal Kombat, high punch, low punch, up to jump and select to use your grappling hook. When you start each level you make a choice of two extra weapons like smoke bombs, gas guns and baterangs. There's not much to the game, you move straight through on a set side scrolling platform path beating up bad guys. The graphics are pretty amazing, being that the game is so much like Mortal Kombat, so are the graphics!

The digitized actors give the game an interesting visual style, and the levels/backgrounds bear a decent resemblance to certain sections of the movie. As someone who's played a lot of Mortal Kombat I thought the controls were decent, but I can understand how frustrating gadget usage must be if you aren't used to inputting 'special move' commands all the time.
Really, the game just gets boring and repetitive after awhile. There's not a lot to do except beat up thugs, and the 'loading' that takes place between each room kills the momentum and gameplay flow. A lack of continues or save feature keeps you from wanting to jump back in when you die. And beyond the graphics in the levels, presentation is downright bad with bland elevator music and a weird batcomputer display that tries to move the narrative along. Plus what kind of game do you have when the manual doesn't even list how to jump down between floors in a room?? 2-player co-op does make the game a bit better, until you either get stuck or get bored. Overall, another dud Batman licensed game.

Pointless Action,

If you want to simply bash enemies, this is the game for you. Players move around a set path(slightly 3-D) and kill any enemy that appears. That sums it up.

This movie attempts to be ahead of its time. It seems like there was an attempt to put live actors into an SNES game so that it could boast excellent graphics.
There is one problem though - Batman has a belly. He looks like he belongs in middle management more than fighting crime. This is kinda bad when Batman is supposed to be a well muscled, dark, ominous figure that strikes fear into criminals. The other problem with the game is that some of the controls are ridiculously difficult. You would think, for example, jumping down to a lower level of the game would be a simple concept...but no, not in this game. Me and a friend of mine tried for hours to get to the lower part of a level to no avail. Even getting the directions wasn't any help. The other issue is the special add-ons to your pack, like a gun that shoots sticky gel or the baterang. In order to execute them, you have to complete a series of buttons - OK, listen game design people, these are weapons, not special power moves. Imagine having to hit five buttons just to use your grenade in "Halo" and you'll understand why I'm so frustrated about this. I don't even bother getting any special weapons because its so difficult. The other aggravating thing about this game: no save. Some levels get so ridiculously difficult in parts that its aggravating to have to start all over again. Especially since the first level has nothing to do with the movie and therefore feels like a huge waste of your time. And incidentally, what was with the loading time? I shouldn't have to wait several seconds just because I went through a door to another room in the same freggin' level. This game is just fun for beating things up. I wouldn't spend too much money on it unless you're seriously interested in it. I wouldn't recommend it too highly.

I remember getting this game back in the day (late 90s) and, I can say it was and still is among my favorites ever. I really don't understand why it seems like many don't like it. Although it can get a little repetitive, I always found it to be quite fun and challenging in a good kind of way. The graphics are among the best for a super nintendo game and the music is amazing. It's Batman of course so the dark, gloomy and twisted music really fits the atmosphere of the game nicely. The action is pretty fun with many different combos and gadgets to learn and use against your enemies. Its mostly designed in the format of a beat em up like Streets of Rage or TMNT but The level designs are done fairly well. Most of them are long and do not go in a straight line. You can move up and down throughout the levels, and can go back to areas that you passed earlier in the stage. The levels also have their own unique characteristics to them which play off the movie, such as the Circus level. The enemies usually attack in groups but its most rewarding to try fend them off like this, using all the arsenal you possess. The combat is simialr to a mortal kombat but I fail to see how this is a bad thing ? The boss battles are pretty fun, especially two-face, although the final riddler boss can be annoying. The riddles are fairly simple and sometimes seem pointless, but they add to the storyline and help you find clues that can end up being rewards like new weapons. The best feature is playing co-op. Since you are often challenged by several enemies, a parter always comes in great and is definitely a stronger element towards enjoying this game. Overall, id say this is a pretty good game, maybe not great or classic by any standard but it is no where, in my view, nearly as bad as it is often presented. Do I sound like an upset customer ? I'd say if you are up for playing an old school Batman game, give this one a shot, I am certain, if you give it a chance, it will grow on you.

Batman license + Mortal Kombat influence = a digitized mess,

I remember playing this game a few times with my friend. And then I asked him why did he get it....over and over. Batman Forever is based on the so so movie of the same name and as licensed games go, developers rush it out the door as soon as possible to make money. So that's one of the many reasons why this game wasn't so great.
As some of the other reviewers have stated, this game used digitized graphics and controls made popular by Mortal Kombat at the time. So, it looks great for a SNES game and uses the Batman license. Unfortunately, everything else about the game sucked. Batman and Robin both move around like either tanks or robots. Basic things like walking and jumping are a chore to do. They each have special moves, which are set up like moves you perform in fighting games, except they rarely work. The enemies were super hard to beat and it seems every couple of minutes you see a loading screen (you should NEVER wait for a game to load if it's on a cartridge!) Add in the lack of save features or continues and you got a hard game that wasn't meant to be played or beaten. Stay away from this crap even if you are tempted to buy it. It isn't worth it and it turned out to be WORSE than the bad movie it was based on. |
