Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 5-10. Half a dozen short stories offer both new and veteran Batman readers a healthy dose of superhero adventure and humor. In sharply shaped and dramatically shadowed style, the full-color illustrations, by Rick Burkett and others, depict Batman in both his superhero and civilian guise, as well as Robin and Catwoman and the usual bad apples, the Joker, Two-Face, the Riddler, and others. As Bob Kane originally conceived the Batman legend, these stories offer ethical issues at the heart of popular-culture-strewn plots, making them easily accessible as well as mildly thought-provoking. The New York City backdrop is as traditional as the techniques of illustration and story development, showing vintage automobiles, mid-twentieth-century costuming, and mostly white faces. There's a lot of gun power and hard-hitting fists, but folks usually get up and run away after such contact--if they're not being held for well-deserved imprisonment. The puns flow as freely as the punches, adding literary richness. Francesca Goldsmith

More About the Author

Ty was born in the wilds of downtown Canada to show business gypsies. His father, Charles, invented televangelism, wrote some best sellers, and helped to kill Elvis. His mother was a fifties singing star on the CBC TV, and his brother invented the internet. Look it all up, it's true. Ty makes his living writing and drawing comic books, working on such characters as Batman, Superman, Spider-Man, The Simpsons, the Avengers, and many others. He can be seen lurking in the outskirts of downtown Canada with his lovely wife, three of his four lovely children, and his three cats, two of which are lovely, but the other one has really nasty scratched up legs that you don't want to see.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Batman I've been looking for., April 10, 2001
This review is from: Batman: The Gotham Adventures (Paperback)
Don't be scared off by the Gr. 5-10 rating. This is high quality comics. "Batman: Gotham Adventures" is the Batman family unrestrained by years of complex continuity coupled with interesting, fun stories that strike at the heart of the characters. The art is dynamic and fluid, following Bruce Timm's "animated" style.

This collection takes up where "The Batman Adventures : The Lost Years" leaves off. Dick Grayson has taken up the mantle of Nightwing, and has come to terms with the replacement Robin, Tim Drake. Bruce Wayne has accepted the need for allies in his personal war. (yes, there really is this level of characterization.) Best of all, Barbara Gordon is not in a wheel chair, but flying alongside them in her role as Batgirl.

Good fun, which is somthing that tends to be missing from modern comics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Graphic Novel for Adult and Kid Batman Fans Alike, December 19, 2005
This review is from: Batman: The Gotham Adventures (Paperback)
I was not expecting much when I picked up Batman: Gotham Adventures; just a momentary diversion with perhaps a snatch or two of Gotham's Greatest Superhero at his best. How wrong I was. The book is excellent all-around. The graphic novel contains the first six issues of the comic book by the same title, originally published in 1998.

Ty Templeton does an incredibly sensitive job writing fresh, exciting stories that genuinely pull on your heartstrings as well as deliver plenty of action. Penciller/Inker/Colorist team of Rich Burchett, Terry Beatty, and Lee Loughridge evoke the old animated series very well. Gotham is big and mysterious, and the characterizations of Batman, Robin, Batgirl, Nightwing, and the gallery of rouges are skillfully executed.

"With a Price on His Head!" - Joker (no Harley in this issue, sorry Quinn fans) kills a media magnate's son over a trifle. The father issues a reward for anyone who will kill the Joker. Now all of Gotham is armed to the teeth and hunting the clown prince of crime. Batman is placed in the position of having to protect his worst enemy.

"Lucky Day" - Two Face is seeking revenge against his father, who has just won it big on a game show.

"Just Another Day" - A boy with almost pathological delusions of being Batman's friend and helper is put in the position to help his idol. Bonus for Gray Ghost fans.

"Claws" - This story really tugs at your heartstrings. Selina Kyle explains why her heart broke twice in one night.

"Polar Opposites" - Great Mr. Freeze title. Grant Walker, whom Freeze froze in an iceberg, comes back to seek revenge.

"Last Chance" - Mystical twist. A trapeze artist working with Dick is shot mid-air. But why? Only the dead man's spirit can lead the Bat Team to the truth.

This review is from: Batman: The Gotham Adventures (Paperback)
This book is a collection of issues #1-6 of the comic book series: Batman Gotham Adventures (The same title of this book.) This book has great stories, with great art. This book has some of the best Batman stories ever told. If you like this book as much as I did I also recomend, The Batman Adventures: The Lost Years.
