This is the anniversary edition of Batman the killing joke which was originally released in 1988. I missed it back then but I am glad I finally picked it up via this set. I must say I liked it as much as I did the Dark Knight returns.

This story explains the Joker. The Batman visits the Joker at Arkham only to find he escaped. The Joker kidnaps Commissioner Gordon after shooting Barbara Gordon in the spine which will leave her crippled for the rest of her life. The Jokers plan is to hold the commissioner in a crazy run down carnival and push him to the limits of sanity by showing pictures of a bleeding Barbara in various states of undress.

All through this affair we get the back story of the Joker. The unemployed comedian desperate to support his wife and future child decides to help some mobsters break into a playing card factory. The night of the robbery he learns his wife dies by an accident but the mobsters "impress" on him the job is on. They plan to take a shortcut through a chemical factory. They are challenged by a guard and in the gun battle, the two mobsters are killed and Batman challenges the future Joker. In fear he jumps to what he thought was a pond or a lake of water but it was turned into chemical waste by the factory. His skin turns white, his hair the familiar green, and his lips are bright red. This is the final break which causes the Joker to be born.

This story and artwork was a major change to this genre. Never, I have read such a story where the villain was so vile and sadistic. It would have been simply evil to shoot and kill Barbara; however, it is truly sadistic to shoot her to cripple her (which ended the career of Batgirl) and then humiliate her in front of her father. The artwork is well done and it adds to the sadistic crazy world of the Joker.

As part of the anniversary; you get two figures in this kit. The Joker is based on some of the artwork from the story. It's a well painted and very posable figure. The fact he dressed like a Hawaiian tourist with a drink and a gun just suits him. Now, the Batman figure is not as good. It's not very posable and the painting along the face lines of the mask has some bleeding. The cape is a heavy plastic which makes it hard to stand and it takes a little effort to get it to stay in the stand. I am also wondering if the cape will become dried and brittle over time. Still, he isn't a bad figure.

Overall, between the two figures and the graphic novel; I am happy with this kit. I am going to look at other toys such as the Joker and Harley Quinn figures which are shown on the back of the novel.
