5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Elfman's best score
The legendary music of Danny Elfman's scores is best exemplified in this dark and beautiful pieced together score. The mood of the film is made only more potently haunting with this music as a guide. It strikes you in the face with tracks like "Birth of a Penguin", while then calming your nerves (sort of) with "Selena Transforms", not to mention the...

3.0 out of 5 stars A dissapointing followup
The original Batman had a wondeful score that can only be described as masterful. Unfortunatly when Elfman returned to score the sequal, the magic somehow got lost along the way.

The problem with this score isn't so much that it's bad, it's more that there are far too many stretches of simply boring music. The CD starts out very primisingly, with a wonderful...

5.0 out of 5 stars Danny Elfman's best score, May 23, 2003

The legendary music of Danny Elfman's scores is best exemplified in this dark and beautiful pieced together score. The mood of the film is made only more potently haunting with this music as a guide. It strikes you in the face with tracks like "Birth of a Penguin", while then calming your nerves (sort of) with "Selena Transforms", not to mention the classic Tim Burton-style circus music in "Batman vs. the Circus." But he overdoes himself with what may be the best music from any music score in "The Final Confrontation." If you love Elfman, Burton, and great music, this is an essential soundtrack to behold.

5.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing and Action Filled, March 21, 2004

This review is from: Batman Returns: Original Motion Picture Score (Audio CD)
The score for Batman Returns is a weird and intriguing piece. The Batman theme is slower and not heard as much. The Penguin's sinister yet childlike theme is playful and dark while Catwoman's is a disturbing piece with violins and drums. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT! Danny Elfman is the man!, July 14, 1999

Danny Elfman, at this point in time, is the only person capable of scoring Batman. The dark tones and the chorus make this soundtrack as remarkable as the movie of Batman Returns.

If you want a great soundtrack, get this right away!

Don't bother with Elliot Goldenthal's garbage of Batman Forever. He is nowhere near as good as Elfman

5.0 out of 5 stars Gotham's Christmas, October 25, 2008

The film "Batman Returns" has a different approach and atmosphere when compared to the original 1989 "Batman". Instead of one villain, we have three: the Penguin, the Catwoman, and Max Shreck. Gotham City turns more gothic and much more sinister. And the music is staken to a whole new level.

Danny Elfman's music reminds me a bit of "Edward Scissorhands", mostly because of the choir and xylophones. It's beautiful, ethereal, and very poetic. The action music doesn't do the original 1989 action music justice, but they're not at all terrible. "Batman vs. the Circus" and "Wild Ride" sound wackier and maybe a bit campier, but the nervous energy shines throughout.

The Penguin's two themes is one of my favorite themes from Elfman. It shows that the villain was never loved by his parents, and he blames society for it. "The Lair" and "The Cemetery" are what make this character, while "The Finale" is a depressing realization that he will never be loved.

Catwoman's theme is such a delight. The high strings sometimes give me goosebumps, and the "meow" sound that the violins make are brilliant. The second half of "Selina Transforms" has such a tragic feel to it. The character is so frustrated at this point that she, like Bruce Wayne, creates a second identity. Batman and Catwoman are alike, if you think about it.

The song on this soundtrack, "Face to Face" by Souxsie and the Banshees, is pretty incredible. Elfman collaborated with the band by writing some of the music (the "meow" sounds are present here).

Drastically different from the style of the original, Batman Returns is darker and gloomier, and I like it very much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful!, November 26, 2000

What we all are thinking is how does he do it! The Batman Returns score is even darker than the first one! Whenever I here the Catwoman theme in the background I imagine a sihouette of a cat run by the dumpsters. When you listen to Danny Elfman's master piece some of the songs on there actually make you want to cry because you can feel The Penguin's or Catwoman's pain and frustration. This cd also includes "Face to Face", which is of course one of my favorites songs. It's from the part were Bruce and Selina are dancing at Shreck's Christmas Eve ball. Although you can bearly hear it. Also if you listen closely you can hear those delightful Catwoman violen screeches, so you know Danny helped produce it. It is defanently a worthy buy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Batman Returns is a beautiful and wonderful score., August 28, 2000

I reveiwd Mars Attacks- the score - and stated that it was Elfman's greatest score. Well, I just got Batman Returns - The Score - today and I just changed my mind. This is Elfman's greatest score, and is one of the greatest scores ever. I never fully realized the beauty of Elman's score for Batman Returns until I listied to it completly and alone. I am a huge fan of John Williams' Star Wars scores, and this one beats "Jedi" and "Phantom Menace". That is real hard to do, but Elman did it. I better get " Sleepy Hollow " and " Frighteners " scores too to complete my Elfman collection. His music in this movie is something out of a strange, mystical and wonderful dream.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great soundtrak with plenty of emotion, July 26, 2000

Of all the Batman's that have been made, I believe this one was without question the best one. One of the reasons it was so good was because of the wonderful music that Danny Elfman made. Although some people might not like the darkness of the music, I find it to make it more emotional. There are many themes in the soundtrak, 3 main ones. These are for Batman, the Penguin, and Catwoman. I especially love the Penguin theme, because it makes you feel for the guy. For this price, I seldom find a CD that is worth the price, but I have no doubt that this CD was worth every cent.
