The Gotham City environment, reconstructed in full 3-D, contains 19 playable maps, including the rooftops, Gotham Industrial Research, and the Batcave. There are also more than 40 minutes of cinematics featuring the original voice cast of TV's The New Batman Adventures. The game's original story line was collaboratively written by Warner Bros. and DC Comics from the files of The New Batman Adventures. The Dolby 5.1 surround sound soundtrack features original music inspired by the TV series.

There have been more lame Batman games created in the last decade than there are tights-wearing felons in Gotham City, but thankfully Batman: Vengeance hits the Bat-target with the golden Batarang. Because the game is based on The New Batman Adventures (an animated series), the visuals are 3-D versions of the cartoon's very stylized designs. This can sometimes cause the backdrops to be rather lacking in detail, but generally it's an interesting and unusual look.

The gameplay is similar to Soul Reaver, with plenty of Batgadgets to play with, and even a few Metal Gear-esque elements sneaking around. There's also an excellent 3-D combat system and a bunch of driving and puzzle subgames of varying quality. A few obvious flaws do get under your tights, such as the oversensitive controls, the intrusive loading times, and the often frustratingly obscure level designs, but this is easily the best Batgame yet. --David Jenkins

The title says it all. This game is a fun, action-packed adventure that brings the animated series to life on your tv. This game promises to look and play better on GameCube than on other systems, because it runs at a constant 60 fps (frames per second) which makes the animation appear smoother. The developers also added some extra graphics effects that weren't possible on Xbox or PS2, such as volumetric (more realistic) fog and smoke. This game will not disappoint Batman fans!

As a Batman fan, I can let out a sigh of relief. I picked up this game on launch day and am I ever glad I did. The story, cutscenes, gameplay, and music are terrific. . .and the voices from the animated series, what more could you ask for. It is not without its flaws, but the feeling you get to finally be the Dark Knight the way he is meant to be outweighs any mishaps about the game. Well done Ubi-soft, my hat goes off to you. If you like games, buy this one!!

The night hath no fury like that of the caped crusader himself, the Batman. Like the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man before him, now so does the Dark Knight take to the expansive world that is 3-D gaming. Ubi-Soft Entertainment does justice to the animated cartoon version of Batman all fans know and love. With the Next (Next) Generation Consoles upon us, its about time Batman received his very own 3-D treatment.

In Batman: Vengeance, the Dark Knight takes on the persona of his animated self as seen in "The New Adventures of Batman" animated series where the cartoon took on a more sharp and angular look than it had previously. Vengeance translates the animated series well and gives fans of the cartoon forty minutes of original "cinematic sequences," a definite bonus. Given the Gamecube's three inch, 1.4 GB optical disc, one would believe that the graphics of Vengeance would fall short of other Gamecube titles like Rogue Leader and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 do to the cinematic sequences taking up so much space. Don't worry my friends, Batman: Vengeance holds the cartoon feel throughout the game and shouldn't disappoint.

Some may find that the cinematic sequences take over the game and cause Vengeance to be nothing more than an interactive cartoon show (is that really so bad?). Don't believe a word of it. During the first mission, this may seem the case (especially at the beginning when credits appear while you're looking for a bomb), but I assure you the first mission is only like this to introduce the story and play elements, although the cut scenes do get bothersome in the first mission when they pop up in the middle of a fight with the notorious Joker.

Vengeance has some interesting gameplay qualities as well. Not only do you get to have Batman take down thugs with his fists (and feet), but with a variety of interchangeable weapons as well. This excessive amount of weaponry is a slight falter point in the game as cycling through Batman's eight gadgets using the L-button, after first pressing the R-button (to switch to first person mode), can cause some serious damage if an enemy is nearby. Otherwise, the weapons are a nice touch and true to the Bat-universe from batarangs to bat-cuffs. Batman also has the use of flash bombs using the Z-button and the bat-communicator (to converse with Batgirl from the Batcave) using the L-button (but only in third person view).

The only real nasty negative part of Batman: Vengeance is the first and third person views. In third person view, the game does not stay behind Batman as it probably should, but a quick flick of the C-stick can quickly get the camera in the preferred behind the head position. What's really disorienting is trying to control Batman in first person mode which requires moving the Caped Crusader back and forth with the Analog Control Stick and turning him around with the C-stick. Never is this more evident than in the boss battle against the cold hearted Mr. Freeze. Thankfully the need to move Batman around in this mode is limited.

Of course Vengeance isn't just about Batman running around and beating the living crap out of people with his fists and weapons, the Dark Knight of Gotham also has those snazzy vehicles to ride around in. Oh yes Batfans, in Vengeance you get the chance to control both the batmobile and bat-wing in a 3-D environment. Of course using both vehicles can be a little more than a challenge at first but any gamer should be able to get the hang of it . . . after a while.

As for sounds, fans of the Batman will be tickled to death as they hear their favorite hero and his nefarious villains speak, although the soundtrack may leave gamers wanting for something else. All the voice actors (or so it would seem) from "The New Adventures of Batman" reprise their respective animated roles in Vengeance. This will be quite a treat along side the cinematic sequences for those who miss the animated series, but sometimes its hard to hear wait your animated colleges and foes are saying. Also, although good, the soundtrack to this game seems somewhat lacking and not very comparable to its animated brother.

The verdict: if not for the "interactive cartoon" like qualities of the game and its forty minutes of cinematic sequences, I would have given Batman: Vengeance only three stars. The controls aren't always that great, the camera can be a headache, and cycling through Batman's many weapons can be annoying, but, really, this is a good quality game that actually has a story. And hey, Vengeance is based on the Batman Animated series so fans of the cartoon can soothe their Bat-toon withdraw with a brandspankin' new animated Batman tale and partake of the adventure.
