4.0 out of 5 stars Can it Be? A GOOD Batman game!!!
"Batman: Vengeance" has got to be one of the best Batman games ever made, with the only contender being "Batman & Robin" for the SNES. 3.0 out of 5 stars Fun for the comics enthusiast; some control quirks, December 9, 2001
This review is from: Batman Vengeance (Video Game)
If you like comics and the updated style of Batman cartoons, you'll really like the look of this game. The art directors did a great job keeping the feel of the show, and the video inbetweens (cinematics) are really good. In fact, getting to see the next one is incentive to keep playing. And while the in-game graphics obviously aren't as polished as the pre-rendered parts, they're still pretty good, staying true to the cartoon. The opening mix of gameplay and cinematics is very dramatic.

The controls could be better. Particularly when you're flying the batplane or driving the batmobile. In fact, the batplane section, so far, has been the weakest part of the game for me, with the batmobile/car chase a close second. Plus, running around QUAKE-style, shooting bat-a-rangs is a little boring.

Some of the in-game directions could use work, too. Some objectives aren't particularly clear at first...they should have tested the gameplay on people who didn't work on it.

My hope is that response will be strong enough for a streamlined sequel, with better overall controls, deeper fighting combinations, and the ability to bat-grapple wherever you'd like. The game isn't particularly hard, and it felt kinda lame beating up Mr. Freeze's thungs, who are all young women! (...who manage to be tougher than Joker's big thugs).

Essentially, this game isn't nearly as puzzle oriented as TOMB RAIDER, but it makes up for it somewhat in overall style. If you see it used for $30-35, definitely pick it up. (Each star is worth $10.)

"Batman: Vengeance" has got to be one of the best Batman games ever made, with the only contender being "Batman & Robin" for the SNES. In the game, you control the Bat through 5 extremely large and immersive episodes, each with their own villain just itching for Bats to lay the smack down on 'em. You can also drive the batmobile as well as fly the batwing (Batplane as it's now called), and perform some intense free-falls in which you have seconds to save a falling person from a certain death... cool, huh? The graphics are stellar, with character models coming right out of the animated series, and with CG video between missions. When you see the way Batman's cape moves during gameplay, it will bring a tear of joy to your eyes. You also have access to all the bat-goodies possible, like batarangs and the grappling hook (which is really cool). You can creep along ledges, surprise villians by sneaking up on them, and even Bat-cuff fallen enemies so they don't get back up and give you a good beating from behind. The only bad part about this game is the controls. The Caped Crusader controls awkwardly, with most novice gamers falling off ledges due to inching forward. The camera can be a real jerk, with most angles during the platform jumping sequences being just plain unforgiving. But after the initial difficulty this presents, if you stick with it, this is arguably the best Batman game ever (though that ain't saying much.) Spider-Man is still the best superhero game out there (...). Until then, this code should help you: at the Title Screen, PRESS L2, R2, L2, R2, SQUARE, SQUARE, CIRCLE, CIRCLE. Start a game, pause it, go to the Special Moves menu, get to the CHEATS section, and activate whatever you want. Have fun!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars great fun, you could do alot worse, October 25, 2001

As cool as the PS2 is, ive had a difficult time finding games that keep me hooked. The EA sports games always rule, but ive had a hard time with the action/adventure games.....that changed with Batman: vengence.....first of all, im a total comic geek, so i was attracted to this game for obvious reasons, however the gameplay is so awesome. You are the dark knight, and you have all of his weapons/gadgets at your disposal. There are many levels ( ive only beaten 6) in which you have to fight a myriad of villians from batman's rogue gallery, all complete with thugs to try to stop you before you get to the level boss....gameplay is fluid, fast, and easy to control. You get to take command of the batmobile, batplane, ect....one of the coolest features, is when you use your batarangs, bat grapple ect, the game kicks into first person view, giving the game two unique perspectives. the only reason why it dose'nt get 5 stars is i rarely give a game that mark ( madden2002, tony hawk ect) but if your looking for a cool action/adventure game for the PS2, this is a good one

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Super Hero Game on the PS2 console, June 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Batman Vengeance (Video Game)
I mean this game is absolutely awesome! Don't be fooled by what other reviews say they're just bad gamers. If you are a real gamer this is the game for you. I'm glad I bought this instead of Spider-Man. What really makes me mad Spider-Man is so cool yet they make his game so pathetic. Unfortunately the Spider-Man game has alot of problems with seeing Spider-Man from different angles sometimes. But Batman: Vengeance is free of that flaw. But seriously people this is raw action. Its hard figuring out what to do sometimes though. But this is one of those games that aren't too hard but not too easy either. It's one of the few games you can be challenged with not having to get your cheats out. The only bad thing is thats 2 things Batman has beat Spidey at,the cartoon and the game. And another good thing is that the movie clips are way more 3-D than the Spider-Man Games for those of you who are having trouble deciding. I mean come on in most of the movie clips from the Marvel games the people have big deformed shaped blobs for hands. UBI Soft is way more detailed. And if you love any cartoons with Batman involved, Justice League, Batman Beyond, you'll absolutely love this regardless what anyone tells you. The only flaw in this game is the controls they're sort of hard but once you get used to them you become very good at other games with hard controls and even better at games with easy controls.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Game for Fans, October 18, 2001

This review is from: Batman Vengeance (Video Game)
For fans of the Dini/Timms animated "BATMAN", this game will be a lot of fun as it plays like a lost episode of the series. All of the dark, gritty atmosphere of the show has been well captured and rendered in 3-D. Voice actors from the series reprise their roles and the story that backs the game is well written. As immersive entertainment, the game works. As a video game in its own right...well...there are a few problems. Graphics and sound are both top notch. The difficulty is in the controls and camera. Video game Batman is not as graceful as a gamer would hope and the inability to control the camera without accessing the "Free Look" option in the 1st person menu makes precise movements difficult and leads to a sense of being easily confused as to where exactly you are. This, as we all know, can be fatal in a place like Gotham City. If you take your time, though, you can get the job done (you don't seem to be penalized often for doing things slowly and deliberately). The game features hand-to-hand combat, boss duels, and driving elements as well, all of which are adequate and generally fun. Overall, I think its safe to say that this game will appeal most strongly to Batman fans: others will probably feel that this is a well designed, unique looking but average platformer with 1st person and vehicle elements added.

1.0 out of 5 stars Batman Vengeance, August 2, 2002

I really looked forward for this title. I love batman always have and always will. The game has the same actors as in the show. That is a plus right there, but that's all. I'm really sorry about that everything else is so really bad. You will not be given the freedom to control batman like you thought you would. The environment to move around in and interact with is so controlled. It gave the feeling of really not being there. Just want to end the review with could of been a great game for me, but was really disappointed, maybe you see something I did not for right now I'm going to the Store to buy a new game. I bought batman yesterday

5.0 out of 5 stars Validate your PS2 purchase. Get this game., January 13, 2002
This review is from: Batman Vengeance (Video Game)
What a great, immersive game. Challenging levels, lots of gadgets, batmobile and batplane levels - I love it.

Like Spiderman for the PS1, you are one with the large environments presented in this game. Each area has a distinctive look in tandem with the enemy you are chasing. Button mashing is effective when taking on the henchmen of each level, but some super-moves add to the mix.

In short, this game makes me late for work and forget to let the dog back inside the house. I love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Batman Has "Vegeance" on poor imitation Superhero games., October 23, 2001
This review is from: Batman Vengeance (Video Game)
Over the years I have seen The Bat appear in several different formats of Video games- but speaking from experience, this has got to be the finest Batman game ever produced. From the sweeping detail of the Animation, to the voices of the actors from the animated series, to the Danny Elfman inspired Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack, and, most importantly, a storyline that could have come straight from an animated episode- this game has it all. And don't forgat the Gadgets! The Batmobile! The Batplane!
This solo based adventure will require you to "become" Batman in order to solve a ongoing Joker case. You must use more than weapons and fists to get through this one- It will take brains! If you are a B:TAS fan, do your self a favor... Pick this one up immediatly!!

This game is great for any fan of Batman. The graphics are impressive, the animations are original and the story is great. At times you feel like you are actually watching the Batman animated series. The voiceovers are all original. (Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill etc.) The soundtrack is also impressive. The only shortcomming of the game is that the gameplay lacks a little bit, but the story and graphics make up for it. I enjoyed this game and I feel that any Batman fan would do the same.

This review is from: Batman Vengeance (Video Game)
I, being the nerdy Batman fan I am, was of course drawn to this game, allured by the ability to roam Gotham City and use all his cool gadgets. But I was sadly mistaken. First off, you can't simply "roam around Gotham," like how you can roam Liberty City in GTA III. The levels play more like an obstical course, negaiting the use of the 3-d graphics. His gadgets are a huge let down; his grappler(the thing he shoots a coard from and pulls him up) can only be used at certain points, and it tells you when, so it takes some of that fun away from it. These things are enough to ruin the game. But there's more. The controls are absolutely hellish. Certain things can only be done at certain times, the combat system is sluggish and very unresponsive (try nailing one of those special moves. HA HA! Like that'll ever happen!) not to mention extreamly anticlimactic. I even cheated using my Game Shark, but it didn't even work! Basicly, as suggested by my title, rent it first, and if you like it, you'll probably stay that way. I disliked it from the beginning, and I've been pretty consistant.

The one plus in this game is the cinamatics. They're better quality than they were on TV, and it also saves them in a file, so you can rewatch them at your leasure (something I REALLY wish Final Fantasy would do).

Bottom line, this could be a good game to the right person, but I certainly don't care for it.
