5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive text book on the use of the police baton., December 26, 2009
This review is from: Baton Techniques and Training (Hardcover)
The author (Tak Kubota)is well known in the karate, martial art and police tactics fields. This book is one of the most comprehensive texts ever written on the use of the police baton and the riot baton. It covers basic stance and movement, how to grip the baton, how to employ the baton in various ways, how to use the baton for self-defense and control. My only real complaint about this text is that most of it is based upon formal karate type movements, with include deep stances and complex patterns of movement. Nevertheless, the real value of this text is that it is an excellent reference source because it includes so many variations of using the baton.

This is also its weak point because research has shown that in real life situations, it is best to learn a few effective techniques rather than a thousand techniques, none of which can be recalled during combat. In conclusion, this book is an excellent instructors reference source, but not really very good for the average police officer.

Rating: 5 Stars Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Use of the Monadnock Straight Baton).
