Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Gr. 3^-6. This volume, from the First Book series, introduces the physical characteristics and habits of bats. Readers will learn how different varieties fly, use echolocation, hibernate, migrate, give birth, raise their young, and find food. The book ends with a discussion of why some species have become extinct through ignorance, malice, and loss of habitat and how others may yet be saved. Illustrating the text are many full-color photographs, including some excellent stop-motion shots of bats in flight. A glossary, bibliography, and the addresses of a bat conservation organization and several Internet sites are appended. Well-organized and clearly written, this offers plenty of intriguing information as well as useful facts for school reports. Carolyn Phelan
