Summarizes the skills covered in the Set 1 readers,
This review is from: Bat's Surprise: Bring-It-All-Together Book (Get Ready-Get Set-Read!) (Paperback)
I purchased this series after finishing the Step into Reading Step 1 books, e.g. Sunshine, Moonshine, etc. These Barron's series of books for beginning readers comprise a series of illustrated stories. Each book in the series uses a set of sight words and emphasizes a word family, for e.g. at, ish, ug, im, op, etc. Each story uses the root words and facilitates the child's vocabulary-building, adding more words to a child's vocabulary as he/she progresses from one book to the next.
The bonus here is that the stories are fun and engaging, and my 5-year-old who will be starting kindergarten in fall has enjoyed them all and is eager to move on to the next book (something we did not experience with the BOB books when we used them back when she was 4). Visual learners who are motivated by colorful illustrations will also love these books as they are vividly illustrated, but not overly garish as to distract from the reading experience. The children who read these series of books will experience increased confidence as they master the reading skills, and the stories are short enough that the books can be finished under 10 minutes. Highly recommended! The books in Set 1 are: Find Nat (Get Ready Get Set Read) The Sled Surprise (Get Ready Get Set Read) Sometime I Wish (Get Ready Get Set Read) A Mop for Pop (Get Ready Get Set Read) The Bug Club (Get Ready, Get Set, Read! first book set 1) The skills are then all brought together and reviewed under: What a Day for Flying!: Bring-It-All-Together Book (Get Ready...Get Set...Read!) My 6 year old son liked reading it. He started to learn to read 6 months ago, and this seemed like the correct level. He thought it was really funny and wanted to read it the next day. I liked that there were new visual details that you pick up each time you read it.

This book is part of a 35 book series called Get Ready, Get Set, Read. There are 5 levels. The first two levels introduce short vowel sounds. The other three levels tackle long vowels and other word families. This is a great, systematic approach to reading. And the stories are fun!One feature we really like is the word list in the back of each book. We use these lists to make flashcards. (Cheap hint - use computer-generated labels and plain index cards to make your own flashcards.) I recommend buying the entire series.
