Caldecott Bound!,
By Bam "School Librarian and Book Lover" (Rhode Island) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bats at the Beach (Hardcover)
This is a fabulous book. Beautifully written prose, with each word obviously carefully chosen. Stunning and imaginative illustrations match the meticulously written story. I am a school librarian and the children absoltuely love this book and want to hear it and look at the illustrations again and again, each time discovering something special they missed the last time around. Highly recommended and a book that can be enjoyed on many levels.

I'll start with the artwork: one word - STUNNING! Brian makes those beach-bound bats so appealing! Young children will want to look at the pictures over and over - there's so much to see. The moonglow on the ocean, the fireglow on the faces of the bats, the humorous activities of the bat children..... And what kid won't LOVE those icky bugmallows roasting over the fire!
Now the text: this is such a fresh story. Kids will love hearing what those playful bats do at the beach while the rest of the world is fast asleep. This one is a pure joy from start to finish - and one that your kids will ask for again and again.

I love this book. It's beautiful and sweet, and very clever. (I especially like the young bat wearing a life vest.) The most wonderful aspect, though, is depiction of bats as gentle, social animals. I really love this book and hope to see more bat outtings in the future.

Who knew bats were so fun!,

I read one reviewer who gave this book 1 star he/she bought it and found it to be nothing but "fluff". I have to firmly disagree I found this book enticing it had a new concept and that was bats in a whole new light (well kinda since the book takes place at night), but normally if you hear about bats their depicted only in Halloween books made out to be creepy, swooping, bug slurping cave dwellers. These bats are FUN, FUN, FUN as is the book! The text is rhythmic and the illustrations are luminous, I highly recommend it for ages 2+.

Sensational. The children were rapt by it, constantly running forward to look at the pictures. I had to stop many times to seat them all back down.

Brian Lies delivers a book on an unusual topic, sure to delight, bats enjoying a beach party. Even among children's books, few work as well as this, with lovely painted pictures filled with humor and rhyming poetry. Increasingly, authors of children's books are returning to the days of recognizing the intelligence of their audience, including their appreciation of artful language. Any parents who have children that love books will surely find that they love this fine work.

Really cute description of bats spending time at the beach after everyone is gone. Lovely illustrations. It's written for children 4-7, but I got it to bring along on our beach vacation.

Every child who has played at the beach or, for that matter, has always dreamed of going to the beach will simply love this book. The illustrations are charming and the writing is witty. Who can resist these charming little bats?!
