Bats love this library,
By southernwriter (st. petersburg, fl) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bats at the Library (Hardcover)
And librarians and the kids they share it with will love this book. The detailed pictures beg for young readers to take a closer look. Baby bats wear swimmies on their arms. A water fountain is turned into a great splashing pool. Characters from books kids know and love make frequent appearances, and the library setting reminds us of the venerable institutions we all remember, or at least wish we'd grown up with. This librarian says the book is not to be missed and I'm off to order my copy now.

You'll Go Batty!,
By Suz E.Que (Massachusetts) - See all my reviews

Get lost in another wonderful adventure of our bat friends written and illustrated by Brian Lies. The story is fun and the illustrations are truly a wonder. A magical tribute to classic children's literature from a "bat's perspective" awaits for you inside to enjoy. Our family really enjoyed it. My 5 and 7 year old boys get very excited to read these bat books, especially at bedtime. We can't wait to see what these bats do next!

Brian Lies is an amazing children's author and illustrator!!!! The details in his pantings are incredible. If you are able to go and listen to one of his readings and book signings it is more than worth your while. He is wonderful with children and really takes his time to describe the development of his stories and pictures to parents/teachers/adults. I can not say enough about this author. I am a children's Speech-Language Pathologist and a parent and he is by far one of my favorite children's author's. I look forward to reading many more of his stories with my son and clients as well! Thank you Brian for sharing your talents and stories with others!!!!!

Fantastic Book,

What a great book! The illustrations are fantastic. My 3-1/2 year old Grandaughter sees more in the illustrations every time we read it together. It is so cute, I'm donating a copy of the book to our local library. The Martha Stewart Show did a piece yesterday on the book. The author had a bat cut-out done especially for the show. It can be downloaded from Martha's site. The kids can draw a picture on the "book" and the bat folded so that the bat is holding the book. Very cute!

Chicago bat lovers,
This review is from: Bats at the Library (Hardcover)
The book is a wonderful introduction to public libraries. And, for those bat lovers in the Chicago area, come to the Riverside Public Library to see the actual library the bats visited. And bring your book with you. Riverside loves visitors!

My kids are batty for Brian's "Bats" series,

Just when I proclaimed "Bats at the Beach" my favorite book, this next one comes around and I can't decide which I love more. "Bats at the Library" is a favorite at our house because my kids (10 and 6) can identify the classic characters in Brian's beautiful illustrations, so it becomes both a great story for bedtime and a "game" - and a platform to talk about the importance of reading and literature. The illustrations have subtle humor and references that adults will enjoy as much as the young readers... it's a fun, smart book that celebrates reading and builds a love for books. What more can you ask for? A great addition to a child's library or a quality gift.

As delightful as first.,

Bats at the library was as fun as Bats at the beach. Every so often the librarian forgets to close a window. Word gets out and the bats head for a night at the library.
There a fun to be had by all. Be it reading books, shaping shadows on a wall, playing with the photo copier, and telling stories. The artwork is great. Be sure to point out things such as the bats hanging in a limb. A little one might get a laugh if you point out the fact they are upside down and there is a roof top at the top of the page. There are references to other books such as Goodnight Sun, Make way for Bats and Mr. Bats wild ride. As with the beach the story and the words flow well. If your child liked Bats at the Beach, they will like this book as well!

This book's richly detailed chiaroscuro paintings find considerable humor at the intersection where bat and human behavior meet.

A Batty Adventure for Kids and Adults to Enjoy,
This review is from: Bats at the Library (Hardcover)
I'm taking a little break from a great serious read, The Hour I First Believed: A Novel -- Very good, but 750+ pages.
I found this wonderful children's book at the library: Bats at the Library, written & illustrated by Brian Lees. The book was released in September-2008. Written in rhythm and rhyme style. This batty adventure is full of silliness, but also references some classic children's literature. In the illustrations, children may recognize some characters from books they may have already read. The illustrations are terrific too. Recommended for children 4-8, as well as for young at heart adults--like me. |
