4.0 out of 5 stars High Tide by Batteaux was the giant hit that never was, February 22, 2008

I remember this album from my days as a college dj--Sort of smooth, MOR-ish/ slightly jazzy rock as I vaguely remember.
I don't recall hearing it anywhere but occasionally on our
little local station where I worked.

But one song clearly stood out--High Tide. If nothing else, this 1 standout should have been a top 5 hit, but nobody ever got to hear it (unless they listened to my late-nite show at the time).

These guys should at least have been one of those 70s 1-hit wonders
they do shows about now on VH1. High Tide was worthy, and got cheated by non-exposure. What a great summer airplay hit it would have made!

Hey,
Batteaux could have been as big as Looking Glass
or Blues Image, for sure.

High tide has a subtlely swirling, pulsating groove, and an airy and tasty lead-in melody (where the title appears). It features an effective arrangement & memorable hook (if you hear it a couple of times). The actual catchy refrain is "WOh Oh there's music in the street, there's dancin' on the beach"--a simple line, but with a cool chord shift and graceful melody line over it, capably performed
by the lead singer. Maybe it was a bit ahead of it's time, 'cause as a pop tune it would fit right in with the "Smooth Jazz" radio format
of the 80s/90s rather than the early 70s when it appeared.

Anyway, I'm not saying it's worth a zillion buck$.

My 4 stars is basically for the 1 song. I don't remember much
about the rest of the album.

But the tune High Tide is a delight, and was
a potential hit that got derailed, IMO.
