4.0 out of 5 stars Sad, angry, thoughtful, creepy and j.o.y.-ful,
This album is all of that and more. Jenny Owen Youngs writes a mean lyric, has a coolly deceptive voice - it lulls you in and then wham! Hits you over the head like a pop song baseball bat. Love it. "Voice on Tape" and "F**K, I Was" are just awesome. RIYL Cat Power, Mary Lou Lord, Beth Orton.

1.0 out of 5 stars I just didn't get it
If you don't mind a thin toneless voice whining about about how "love grows on me like a tumor" or her emoting about how "f**ked was I," then you may like this pretentious and delusional suicidal drivel; otherwise I recommend that you stay far, far away... This is like the absolute worst of the Liz Phair-genre of music that I've ever heard. "Batten the Hatches"??? What...

5.0 out of 5 stars wow, May 18, 2009
This review is from: Batten the Hatches (Audio CD)
This Cd was not what I expected! I went to a show in San Fransisco with my girlfriend, and the whole way there I was telling myself to arrive with an open mind. I'm not really a big fan of female singers, but any live music is better than nothing at all. I was blown away by her live performance. I bought the Cd a few weeks later, and I was impressed, not only by her skills but by her song writing abilities. There are a lot of big winners on this CD. BUY IT!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Sailing Smoothly, August 3, 2006
This review is from: Batten the Hatches (Audio CD)
This album grows softly and slowly in your heart. Jenny Owen Youngs has a florid Folk jazz style with her own unique mellow voice. She has noticable musical depth and talent. She is another promising graduate of SUNY Purchase(e.g. Regina Spektor) to hit the alternative folk scene.
Just as Regina is becoming well known I see Jenny also making it bigtime.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT CD FROM A GREAT SINGER/ SONGWRITER, May 12, 2007

Honestly, I had not heard of Jenny until I found out she would be warming up for Vienna Teng at the Palace Of Fine Arts in San Francisco a couple of days ago. I listened to a few cuts on the web and it grabbed me quickly, so I bought the CD a few weeks before the show. I listened to the CD in my bedroom at least a half-dozen times and loved every single listen. At the show, she was every bit as good as on the CD, and with a great sense of humor. If you like the female singer/songwriter genre, I highly recommend this CD, and am actually listening to it again as I am typing this. And, should you have the opportunity to see her live, I highly recommend you take it. You won' be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Beautiful, Beautiful record..., April 10, 2007

just one of those stunningly good records you'll listen to over and over, until you wake up one day and realize you know every song by heart.

it is a debut record that makes you stand up and take notice. Haunting and dark, sweet and beautiful, Jenny's lyrics and music will make you laugh, smile, cry, frown, and sing along.

It's only a matter of time before Jenny Owen Youngs is a household name.

buy this record. you'll be a better person for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I CANT stop listening to this album, April 11, 2007

Alyssa "Alyssa" (San Francisco, CA USA) - See all my reviews

I love this album. (And this artist.) She's got amazing lyrics, really good music, a wonderful voice. She's got a really good blend of a singer-songwriter, airy feel and a really fierce edge. What's not to love?

"Love grows in me like a tumor
a parasite bent on devouring its host
I'm developing my sense of humor
'til I can laught at my heart between your teeth
'til I can laught at my face beneath your feet."

Can't argue with that kind of poetic cynicism, now can you? I HIGHLY recommend Jenny Owen Youngs. I can't imagine there's anyone out there this stuff wouldn't resonate with at least a little.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jenny is Triumphant!, May 3, 2011
This review is from: Batten The Hatches (MP3 Download)
I've loved Jenny for awhile now, and I can't decide if I prefer this or Transmitter Failure, but either way she really owns her music, and she is amazing in concert. This is not an album to be missed for any indie folk lover

5.0 out of 5 stars Moody, pretty, honest, February 16, 2008

Let me start by saying that I usually listen to punk or other music that is fast with a lot of energy. This is not the genre of music that I usually listen to, but I like it.

I recently lost someone close to me, and the mood of a few songs fit what I was feeling. I bought the CD, figuring I'd listen to it while I got really drunk, and then retire it to the cabinet of forgotten music.

The more that I listen to it, the more I like it. I like the honesty of the lyrics. I can appreciate feeling awkward and unsure; making mistakes and sometimes caring, sometimes not; wanting to be loved. It's all stuff that I relate to.

In Drinking Song she sings, "I don't know what's wrong with me, but I wish that it were something else". It's that kind of sentiment that I appreciate, or the lyrics in F*** Was I, "If we weren't such good friends, I think that I'd hate you. If we weren't such good friends, I'd wish you were dead."

She is a cynical poet. I like that she plays guitar. I hope that she stays honest and writes music that she believes in. It's what sets her apart from the over-produced crap that I've heard from other young female song writers.

I have a copy of the original release of this record, but I'm getting this one as well. Not just even for the additional song, but because I'm so in love with this album. The songs are amazing. I even like the lyrics, and I don't normally care for lyrics. I look forward to a lot more music from Jenny Owen Youngs.
