The story was decent, but I was disappointed by the editing work. There were lots of spelling and grammatical errors, and a major mess with the gender of the dog - which changed from male to female several times over the same two or three paragraphs. I know this sounds nit-picky, but those kinds of repeatedly sloppy writing and editing mistakes really distract me from getting truly absorbed in the story. I found myself frustrated at times with the protagonist's hypocrisy, and it was hard to really connect with her because her behavior was so inconsistent and selfish at times. Overall, for a freebie, it was fine. But the publishers really need to take a look at whoever is proofing copy for them, because there are an embarrassing number of serious mistakes, and it took away from an otherwise decent storyline.

I don't read as often as I would like to and I have never read a "romance novel" before this one. A dear friend of mine put me onto this book. After hearing her rave about how great it was, I had to give up my man card and give it a go. WOW!! Am I glad I did.
Just so you know, my favorite movie is "The Notebook". Love it. Ya'll, I would stack this novel up against The Notebook at any time. This book is a well crafted book with characters that truly respect and genuinely love one another. The book is filled with twist and turns that you cannot wrap your head around until the last page is turned. In this story, lively romance, quick wit, heartbreak, forgiveness and acceptance are so naturally developed by the author. The chemistry is contagious. You literally don't know which way the story will go from one page to the next. It is a definite page turner ya'll. I finished the book in a total of 3 days. It usually takes me the better part of 3 weeks to read a book of this size. Take it from a guy who has never posted a review on a book before, you will finish this book in record time yearning to read more about the life of Julia and her friends and family. This book will be a best seller and personally I would love to see it as a movie on the big screen in the near future. Congrats to Laurie Van Dermark on an amazing book. FYI....I am on Team Gabe!!

Really needed to have an editor fix all the incorrect and misspelled words. Had a decent plot but characters were either blackest black or whitest white with little subtlety. Perhaps a first novel and author will improve with continued effort. But get an editor! Finding multiple mistakes on a single page was annoying.

The Battered Heiress Blues is by far the most well-written novel on these virtual shelves today!. Julia Spencer is a strongly and spendidly developed character. The insights into her personality become apparent within pages of reading. Her combination of strengths and weaknesses are shown with tragic and comical efforts. There is a fresh twist on a classic story line of a conflicted love affair. The author succesfuly suprises you with every unexpected turn of events. You will no misgivings from picking this book up! I dreamed of being Julia for weeks!

The character reactions weren't always understandable based on what was established at other times about them. They weren't as consistent in what they did, and this made suspending disbelief for the sake of the story difficult at times.

I was unable to continue reading past the first chapter of this book. It jumped from a past time to the current, then back to the past with little warning, confusing me. I ran out of the patience needed to read it.

Ms. Van Demark really should enlist the help of readers who can tell her what she needs to do to make a good story idea actually readable. Then, I might be convinced to buy and re-read it.

I got at least 30 pages in, and the story did not grab me. Too vague of a beginning without much in the way of compelling details

This book is an easy, enjoyable read. The author did an excellent job of developing each character, helping the reader to identify with personality traits and conflicts. The story is compelling, with the perfect mixture of details, emotions, and drama. The relationships between characters were richly developed, yet easily understood. The main character has many traits of strong, Southern women, and is a character that could easily be followed into additional novels. Overall, a very well-written book!
