4.0 out of 5 stars Good starting point
This book is very good for those who don't understand rechargeable and want a good starting point. It covers NiCd, NiMH, Lead Acid, and the Lithium Ion batteries quite well for the beginner.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good review material, but now dated
This is a good book for the basic review of battery technologies. I (as an engineer) would have preferred more chemical and technical details, but as the title suggests, it is pretty basic, and consequently easy to understand. The fundamental problem with this book is that battery technology is rapidly evolving, and much has changed since the book was written in 2001...

All you have ever wanted to know and more about Batteries,
large and small.
A very comprehensive book which covers how to get the very best from your re-chargeable cells as well as the safety requirements.
If you want to understand why your electronic device battery doesn't last as long as you had hoped, then this is the book for you

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book on Rechargeable Batteries, December 23, 2009

This review is from: Batteries in a Portable World: A Handbook on Rechargeable Batteries for Non-Engineers, Second Edition (Paperback)
This is an excellent book. It deals with Lead Acid, Nickel Cadmium, Nickel-Metal Hydride and Lithium batteries (Li-ion and Li-poly). There is enough on the chemistry to provide background but the main text deals with the performance of batteries at their terminals. That is where most of us deal with them. The subtitle of the book is "a handbook on rechargeable batteries for non-engineers". The contents live up to this subtitle. There is little or no maths. The explanation is in written form with graphs and tables to provide key information.

The book is authored by Isidor Buchmann of Cadex Electronics with many associate authors. A lot of the illustrations are of Cadex chargers and test equipment. Some academics might object but I found that reassuring. At least the authors know enough to stay in business.

If you want to view the content it is available on the Cadex Electronics web-site. The book is also offered at a reduced price via Amazon Canada. The delivery quoted is 4 to 6 weeks but my copy came in 10 days. My copy paid for itself several times over by allowing me to extend the life of two packs of power tools batteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Batteries in a Portable World, August 22, 2009
This review is from: Batteries in a Portable World: A Handbook on Rechargeable Batteries for Non-Engineers, Second Edition (Paperback)
I think the sub title sums the book up. `A handbook on rechargeable batteries for non-engineers' and is taken from the authors company web site. Some may disagree about the use of non-engineer!
It does get technical but that's not a bad thing. Batteries are the products that seem to get forgotten about until things stop working. Then after the post mortem people tend to say `I wish I had known that, I could have done something about it'
This book gives a good basic understanding and also helps in selecting the proper battery type for the application. I found it informative.
The author does use the book to sell his companies products, I don't find this a problem but some might.

A well written book. This can be a rather dry subject but the author gives just the right amount of information to keep the readers interest. I have become the "battery expert" at work and in the local amateur radio community.
