The bad news: installing was kind of a pain in the butt. I managed to install it with the included parts but I should have just gone to the parts store for a longer ground cable.
The parts included various jumpers & extensions that had lots of bare metal. I used these on the positive battery connection, and didn't feel comfortable leaving them uninsulated. I used "liquid electrical tape" that i bought at my local hardware store; it's much like plasti-dip that i've seen used for tool handles. maybe even the same stuff.
Worse, when the battery finally died last winter, one of the metal brackets cracked while I was tightening it, so i wasn't able to reinstall it without a trip to the store, which i haven't gotten around to yet...really should have just bought that longer cable in the first place.
This was at 12:30AM in pouring rain so getting someone to come jump my car wasn't going to be easy. Then it hit me I had this little gadget on there.
Well I popped the trunk (Mazda Miata) and clicked the button. Sat back down, turned the key, and the car started right up! I'm very thankful for this device and recommend it for everyone. It is a bit pricey, but since running the battery down is hard on the battery you'll recoup some of the cost in battery longevity. Plus having your car jumped is usually never good on either car involved.
You may also have to make a special mounting bracket for some vehicles batteries with side post mounts. I had to make an aluminum flat bracket about 2" x 4" to mount on the side posts so it will fit correctly on my 2004 Suburban. It looks like it will fit "as is" on my other car and truck.
Product works a little too well. It would cut the battery flow during times of normal operation, example opening both sliding doors at same time while automatic headlights were still on.
It shut off the truck due to normal electronic function, example- stereo/DVD/Navigation units in off mode and automatic lights had not completed their timed shutdown.
We never had a dead battery. Just had to open the hood every morning to reset the Battery Brain switch.
Due to the numerous times the battery brain shut off the vehicle battery, the factory installed electronics started to have difficulty resetting to their original position, example- 6 disc CD player would kick out all the CD's as well as cycle through all channels before being able to start playing.
Product performs as advertised, a little to sensitive to normal volt drops.
Installation went fairly smooth, with exception to getting the module attached to the battery. The reson for the difficulty was because I use the side posts on the battery, and thus I don't have much wiggle room for everything. I actually pulled the battery out of the car, connected the Battery Brain, then dropped the battery back into the car. Estimated install time - 30 minutes (could do the next one in half the time).
For the price of this unit, I wouldn't have been able to have a mechanic open the hood and look for 10 minutes.
When I get some free time, I'll investigate how to install the bypass so the radio presets don't get wiped out. But for now, I'm happy with the car just starting!
