Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-8-- Each of these titles focuses on a particular facet of World War II. No background information is given as the authors jump directly into the action. Details of campaigns and strategies are fairly easy to follow, but basic knowledge of the war is required. Dates and relevant statistics are included throughout. The actions of key figures such as Stalin and MacArthur are given, but without capturing much of their personalities. The lack of firsthand accounts from soldiers or civilians means that readers never get a sense of the immediate reality of wartime. Excellent black-and-white photographs, however, provide some of the liveliness missing in the text. Although evenhanded overall, terms such as ``bloodthirsty'' and ``cruel'' slip in here and there in reference to the Germans and Japanese, clearly indicating the authors' viewpoints. Appendixes are generally adequate, but Battle of the Atlantic has no maps and contains at least two erroneous page references in the index. Conroy's The Battle of Bataan (Macmillan, 1969; o.p.) is a more thorough and readable presentation. Although far from perfect, this series will be of some use to report writers and fairly interesting for war buffs. --Steven Engelfried, Pleasanton Library, CA
