Product Description

This is a descriptive, statistical and strategic reference to over 500 great land battles of history. Each entry follows a standard tabular layout and most have a further descriptive section detailing the casualties, combatant involved and actual course of the battle. All entries have a code number relating to a main map reference and appendices on key commanders and first use of a weapon or tactic. The layout enables easy access of date, comparison of similar battles and reference worldwide on the general map. The book is aimed at military and general historians, students, wargamers and modellers.

4.0 out of 5 stars The quick and dirty details on almost any battle of history!, December 7, 1998
By A Customer
If your looking for quick details on almost any battle of history, then this is the book for you. The Date, location, war or campaign, opposing sides, number of troops engaged, and casualties of each conflict is given. On a good portion of the battles the author does give a short one or two paragraph summary of the battle. I found the book to be an excellent source for finding out information on specific battles of history.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Battle Book: The Short Version, December 11, 2005

(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Every so often, one may want the short Monarch Notes version of any important battle in world history. In THE BATTLE BOOK, Bryan Perrett (misspelled as Byran on the front cover) covers 566 battles in as much detail as he can squeeze in in just about 16 square inches apiece. He includes the bare bones basics: the date, location, opposing sides, objectives, forces engaged, casualties, and result. Most of these conflicts I was not familiar with; probably this was a good reason to have this text as a ready reference. I checked out some relatively less known engagements, like the battle of Maldon in 991, with which I was familiar, and discovered that Perrett has done a masterful job of encapsulating the immediate and the long term consequences of a struggle that foreshadowed a later invasion by William Conqueror. THE BATTLE BOOK is a worthy if brief introduction to the many ways that human beings have been killing each other for the last three thousand years.

4.0 out of 5 stars A nice quick reference, March 8, 2007
This is a nice quick reference for high-level, overviews of just about every major and some not-so-major known battles ever fought. The battles are listed in alphabetical order, however there are appendices in the back that group them by war and that list major commanders. This is a nice quick reference for military buffs and historians.
