JOINING THE WRESTLING CLUB,
By Sesho "www.sesho.libsyn.com" (Pasadena, TX USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Battle Club Volume 1 (Paperback)
When Mokichi Saitou arrives at Swan Academy Senior High School he is determined to become the baddest dude on campus and rule over its students as his devoted and fearful subjects. Too bad he gets his butt kicked twice that first day and hung up on a fence, minus pants, with his small "unit" hanging out for everyone to ridicule and he also gets thrown to the ground and destroyed by a beautiful girl! Hoping to improve his fighting skills he decides to join the wrestling club, not knowing that the same girl that smashed his head into the ground, Tamako, is a member! He quickly learns that his training will be brutal, but at least he'll get to try all kinds of compromising positions with the pretty girls of the club. He even starts to get sweet on Tamako, but his idyllic existence will come to an end fast as the Karate club wants to settle a bloodfeud. Mokichi is the weakest member on the wrestling team so he'll probably catch the most heat.
This title is rated Mature for a reason, since it features a lot of nudity and sexual situations, but nothing beyond the equivalent of a rated R movie. Battle Club is not pornography. It is simply what I would call "erotic comedy" with a lot of action thrown into the mix, but the fighting always takes on a sexual context with the fighter's hands, heads, and other extremities being stuck in the most tabooish of places possible. There's also plenty of panty shots no matter even if a character is just tying their shoes. There's not much of a plot here, but the manga is quite funny, especially in a scene where Tamako takes on a giant great white shark with her patented wrestling move! Sexy title whose comedy shines.

Fan Service, and more!,
By
This review is from: Battle Club Volume 1 (Paperback)
When first decided to read this manga I felt that; okay another fan service book, with fighting, I was right. This manga is absolutely enjoyable to read. The story is based in wrestling fight styles as being the strongest form of martial arts. I must admit I am starting to get convinced. The story itself is about a guy Mokichi, who is a loser who decides to join a all girl wrestling team. Oddly enough, he manages to join, after getting brutally beaten several times. As the story progresses you will see that he does not get stronger, but shows more so how much of a wimp, and a wuss that he is.
Anyway I digress, the story is pretty fantastic, but I love that type of stuff, probably because I love working out ^^. When I read it, I get pumped up to go work out for about 2.5 hours. If you like fan service, and you enjoy combat mangas that has comedy this is something that you will enjoy. But if you want an in depth story. Yeah... steer clear. Simple, Action, Boobs, and Panty Shots all wrapped into one. If you want a manga that has more of a story try Battle Vixens, there is more of a story and the same author put alot of work into both of these. OH! one more thing... just be warned there is a DG (Dick Girl/Guy) in the Manga!

This review is from: Battle Club Volume 1 (Paperback)
Reading this manga is a great use of an hour or so. The story begins with Mokichi, an angry guy who likes to beat people up, though he's the one getting beat up. Mokichi stumbles upon a bouncy young girl doing someone elses' errand for Pocari (a tea or soda?). They stumble on one another, breaking Pocari bottles in the process. Anyway they get in a fight, Mokichi is humiliated in the front of the school, he joins a wrestling club and so on and on, and on. My favorite character and the only one I actually can relate to myself would be Taki, a cross-dresser who is really just a guy blessed with an overly feminine body. I really enjoyed flipping pages and eating up the book (not literal) and it's contents such as the gorgeous girls, and the high-powered action, which seem to fuel graphic novel, and without it 'Battle Club' would not be so great. And it is somewhat reminiscent to 'Battle Vixens'/Ikki Tousen because of the martial arts fighting theme and fanservice, although different storylines (of course.). And by the way the storyline is weak, but it's great and just what I was looking for and expected.
