I really liked the game for it's simplistic gameplay. It has a lot of subtlety to it but still remains simple. The story mode is cute if you are the type that chuckles at character interactions. I can see it being fun with a lot of friends but I can also see the extremely odd characters putting off people. While it probably isn't making it onto my favorite fighting game list, it has a lot of charm and is easy to pick up. That part I like a lot because it means that friends can learn it without having to study up like they would for most other fighting games. It is a bit of a return to simpler times, like the old street fighters or samurai showdown.

Great Unique Fighter,

I loved Battle Fantasia. I'm an old school fighting game fan and I've been playing since the first arcade iteration of SFII. I'm a huge fan of unique characters and artwork and this game has them in spades. Not to mention pretty complex gameplay mechanics if you take the time to get into it. What's so great about Battle Fantasia is even a novice can play and win with great results.... and a more advanced player can really delve into the deeper mechanics. The storylines were pretty interesting and quirky as well.
At a less than $20 price point now is the time to pick up the title if you haven't already.

Not half bad for an old school type fighter,

I absolutely loved this game. It's a simplistic return to old school fighters. Considering this came from the creators of the guilty gear franchise, I was expecting it to be a fast paced, thumb blistering affair that requires cat like reflexes to get through the game. I was suprised to learn that it actually had more in common with street fighter more than guilty gear.
I'm not a huge fan of playing fighting games on the Xbox 360, as the joystick to me feels a little too loose and the D-pad is a nightmare to use due to its placement on the controller, but the characters control really well and are very responsive with the Joystick. The game has a lot of really quirky and weird characters that are set in a fantasy type scenario. Truly, many of these characters are for most intents and puposes old-school-type RPG characters. The game balances itself pretty well and the characters are well balanced and easy to learn. However, it only loses one star in my opinion becuase of the tried and true (and somewhat annoying) formula of putting super cheap last boss characters into the game. Granted, with enough practice you can beat him, but in order to do so, you have to be cheap yourself. The game has really good music, and also seems like something that stepped out of an RPG. All in all it's a great game and I thought it was well worth the buy.

If you are primarily interested in the battle system, then hopefully you are looking for that lower-scale street fighter style of fighting. The game delivers that just fine. The fighting system requires you to spend some time learning it. That is a good thing, as it requires you to actually have skill with a certain character before you can face a worthy opponent.
There isn't a huge compliment of fighters, and it's hard to really get to know them since it's in all Japanese and you just read subtitles during the 'cutscenes.' The story is presented in a visual novel style. It's not terribly interesting, but its not a bad story. You might find yourself in the beginning, skipping past without reading some things until things get more interesting. Overall, though, it IS a fighting game. It will amuse you the most if you have plenty of people to play it with, but it is definitely more of a short-term space filler type of game, as opposed to anything epic.

First off, I have never heard of this game before. The only reason I picked this game up was because a store I like now sells cheap used games and this was the only game I was somewhat interested in. Now thank goodness this game was cheap. I would have been pissed off if I had to pay full price. Dont get me wrong it is a somewhat fun game. First off the fighting mechanic is fun...but yet has been done. Now there are several modes, there is arcade (nothing special with no endings) and storymode (you choose who you want to play as and go through their story), online and of course the typical training modes, challenges and artwork. One big problem is the roster only consists of 12 fighters...one of which is the final boss. Some of them are pretty cool, plus we get their backstory before each story begins. However there is one fighter I cant stand...Marco. All he does is complain, cry or scream and whats worst he does it in Japenese with english subtitles (like everyone else). The storyline was confusing, most of the time I had no idea what the hell was going on. If you want to try it, rent it or look for a very cheap copy. Pros: -Individual story modes, with different characters, each unique -Current price -Fighting mechanics is fun -Before each story we learn about each fighter Cons: -One word....Marco -Most of the game is in Japense with english subtitles -Very few fighters -Confusing storyline -Thank goodness I didnt pay full price -Fighting mechanics has been done before -Nothing special about arcade mode, and no endings

First of all, I wasn't expecting a top tier fighting game, or a great storyline. However, the other reviews here made it sound like a promising diversion with at least adequate gameplay and charm.
However, after actually playing it a short time (but not short enough), it did not live up to even that. I found the gameplay to be fairly poor and not very engating. I found the animation of the characters to be disappointing (though, the actual art was somewhat interesting). The character designs were painful. The dialogue and stories were awful (and borderline offensive). I regret even paying $13 for this game. If you want to see examples, read on, otherwise just leave this game's page entirely. Maybe it was a mistake to start off in Story Mode. Maybe it was a mistake to start off with the Dwarf King character. But let me tell you about the initial experience... First of all, the introduction backstory was rather long for a fighting game. It seemed even longer because it was dumb. In a nutshell, The Dwarf King of the mighty Dwarven Empire gives up his throne in order to fight some terrible evil with three other heroes. After that, he settled down with the humans, opened up a company and just spent the rest of his days relaxing and drinking until now. The first location in this story is the Dwarf King drinking heavily and harassing the serving girl. She tells him they are out of drink and he gets upset and demands more to drink. She says there isn't anymore, so he fights her... He wins. There still isn't any drink. She mentions some connection between the drink being gone and rumors of some rumors of a rising evil... Next setting and fight... He goes to some town and talks to this young kid, who calls the Dwarf King "Uncle", who wants to go out fighting and adventuring. Dwarf King says it's too dangerous for a young kid, and he is going to fight him to stop him from coming. He beats up the little kid, the kid cries, and doesn't go. Next fight, same setting... This older kid (very feminine teenage male) shows up looking for the kid. The Dwarf King keeps referring to him as the kid's partner and wants the kid's partner to prove that he can take care of the kid... so they fight. Now, he goes to an observatory to see an old friend. It's a freaking bunny. He and the Bunny get nostalgic and decide to fight for old time's sake, and to prove that the dwarf is still in shape... Now after the Dwarf King wins this fight, he goes to a cave where he says there used to be demons. Now he finds a very young lady who also calls him Uncle. He says she's like a daughter to him and he can't let her go into danger... so he fights her to stop it. This is where I stopped playing because a big huge oafish character with slow clumsy movement and attacks was just getting wrecked by a fast moving medium ranged attacker. However, in my first fights, I'm fighting such poorly conceived opponents as a serving girls because they run out of alcohol, a little boy (who seems to be portrayed as less than 10 years old), a feminine young teenage boy, a bunny, a teen girl who is supposed to be like a daughter to him, and for the stupidest reasons. I'm sorry to put you through all that, but I just want you to see just really how bad it it is.

This is a wonderful game IF you like the old school street fighter style.
This isn't for those that like the turbo speed button mashing multi-hit air combo players. The characters are well done, the moves are what we've grown familiar with, the look is normal anime style. It is cheap 2D fighting fun.

I actually found about this game by chance and for the great price it was going for decided why not and bought the game seeing that I was already playing BlueBlaze and Street Fighter IV at the time, and now I see that choice was a very smart one this game has proven to be just as entertaining and addictive as the previous mentioned two games. The game is about the same as most two person 2D fighting games as you have the standard arcade mode or you have the storyline mode and can see how it plays out for the character you pick to play with at the time, the animation voice cast and music all fit perfectly for the game and it will remind some of some other games a little like Eternal Sonata or the Final Fantasy games not in how you play the game itself but moor of the character designs and a few other things. If you think this is going to be a rpg game or something than think again as explained it's basically just a fighting game between two characters so if you were expecting more you might want to pass this over and try out another game like Final Fantasy an the like. So for any fan of games like Tekken or Street Fighter genre games here's another great one to add to the collection for your home gaming library...

Another Classic from Arc Systems,
By Siklootd (Santa Fe, NM) - See all my reviews

Arc Systems is a game developer that has grown in popularity thanks mostly because of their ingenious creation known as "Guilty Gear". When Guilty Gear first debuted, gamers were awestruck by the strange and unusual character designs, a trait Arc Systems is now famous for. This trait carried over to their latest game BlazBlue, but another game was released by the popular developer that many overlooked, that game is "Battle Fantasia". Upon first glance of the cover art, I assumed the game was an RPG, however, upon seeing the Arc Systems logo upon the box at my local store, I knew it was actually a fighter. Going with my instinct to trust Arc Systems, I purchased the game without hesitation. Am I disappointed? Not at all.
Battle Fantasia, in the same respect as BlazBlue, features only a handful of characters. These characters are very unique though, and each one fights completely differently than each other, making the fights intense and fun. In true Arc System fashion, the pace is fast, the mechanics are solid, and the gameplay addictive, something gamers have come to expect from the developer. The game features polished 3D sprites placed within 2D realms with 3D background animations, a graphical process many developers have dubbed "2.5D". The look is unique, and fits the sprites quite well. Each character has a handful of special moves, including an ultimate attack and "heat attacks". Heat attacks are attacks that are performed whenever a character enters "heat mode". The attacks that are used in this mode vary by character and are unique to the mode, meaning characters cannot use these attacks outside of activating "heat mode". The game also features a nice RPG touch, in which characters have varying health points based upon the character chosen. For example: Deathbringer has more health than Marco, and their health is clearly stated in the form of HP, very similar to a traditional RPG. This adds a nice touch to the game, but doesn't really contribute much to gameplay when controlling a character properly. The difficulty is quite challenging and the characters are well balanced, with the exception of "Deathbringer" who is unfairly difficult to fight and is very easy to win as. All in all, Battle Fantasia is a great addition to the steady line of solid fighters put out by Arc Systems, and is a solid fighting game on the Xbox 360. With easy to execute moves, intriguing characters, and solid depth, you can always find something to come back to with this game. |
