Editorial Reviews

In 1942 an elite fighting unit was formed, officially named the First Special Service Force. They were made up of mountain men, hunters and all-around misfits, and were trained to scale cliffs, jump out of airplanes, and kill Nazis. The following summer, days before the invasion of Sicily, the best of these men were handpicked for a desperate mission. Amidst the bloodshed of World War II, these men went armed for combat, and the only way out was to aim, fire and stay alive.

1.0 out of 5 stars terrible, boring movie -- a rip off at any price July 22, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
this is the third time I was suckered into PAYING for a movie on amazon that was complete crap. I want my money back.

No-name actors, negligible production values, threadbare plot, all filmed with one camera in and near a deserted town somewhere in California or Arizona (supposedly Sicily). Some ridiculous errors, like one officer with captain's bars on his lapel but a lieutenant's bar on his hat. Very little dialog -- most of the movie was 2 small bands of German and us soldiers spraying machine gun fire at each other. Like the whole last half of the movie was just shooting. A real platoon would have run out of ammo in the first 10 minutes.

1.0 out of 5 stars LOW, LOW, budget... July 3, 2012
By vmzfla
WWII yarn! A special forces squad is sent to pre-allied invasion Sicily to retrieve A US Army captain who was captured during a recon mission. This is a noisy boring movie where everything becomes predictable and runs way too long. There is an element of treachery thrown into the mix. All in all this flick is like opening a bag of toy army men and having the good guys slaughter hordes of Germans, that keep on coming. A couple of Italian actresses(playing freedom fighters) are added for spice, but other than their bravery and a sexual inuendo their presence adds little. You have your stereo typical SS officer, that knows something is up, and turns out to be a buffoon. There's a kind of comical gun-ho southern guy,(terrible accent)who's skilled with a knife that's mildly amusing! German soldier reenactors have a field day but if it weren't for all the noise, you would have surely fallen asleep. Don't rent and don't buy! PS: Doesn't the box look similar to that of "Saving Private Ryan"?

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh. My. God. July 15, 2012
It was just so.....bad. My neighbor's kids provide better action in the backyard. The model airplanes used were somewhat amusing. Then there were the accents: the "southern" guy who sounds like he's drugged. I'm from the South, for me it's like using Rosie Perez for the voice of James Earl Jones. When Germans run for cover, the ones on the left run right, the ones on the right run left. The leader standing in the middle, who by the way is wearing a black leather coat in the summer, just stands in the middle of the road. Soldiers put camo grease on their faces, but run around with their white necks and chests showing. The whole time, a soundtrack plays drums, it sounds like background music from that old 1942 arcade game. There are a couple actresses in it, I believe the "Italian" ones are American. Their nice to look at, but only have a few lines. The guns sound like cap guns. While some of it is decent, most of the acting and filming is just nonsensical. If you really want to watch it anyway, do what I did: Wait until you're seriously bored in a hotel, have a beer, and shout advice to the characters on screen. "Run! Get a better agent!"

2.0 out of 5 stars Pretty darned bad. July 4, 2012
The actors weren't all that bad, but the overall quality of the movie was. It's a little hard to say what exactly Hollywood has to do to make a quality movie, but whatever it is, this one didn't have it. It being unrealistic was just one part of the badness. In one scene, for example, the guys land on the beach--and they're supposed to be the best of the best--and you can see somebody else running up along the beach on the side, but none of them see him...until I guess they got to the cue spot in the sand..."Hey! Who goes there!" Parts like that are almost funny. I could tell after about three minutes that it was wasted money but I couldn't watch more than 15 minutes.

2.0 out of 5 stars DIRTY HALF DOZEN August 12, 2012
This is a low budget film about a special group of men selected to go on a rescue operation in Sicily. They are to rescue Captain Lyle Lewis (Dennis LaValle) from the Nazis and be aware there may be a spy. Lt. Wright gets to hand pick a crew of five men to accompany him to Sicily. The film doesn't take the time to build a bunch of colorful memorable characters, but rather concentrates on just two of the men. One was Sgt. Douglas Dickey (Clint Glenn Hummel) from Mississippi. His accent sounded like he was impersonating Will Farrell doing a fake accent. The other character we got to know was Lt. Wright (Scott Martin) who had to leave his wife,a private (Bea Zee Brazen) behind.

Lt. "I'm a Lt. I out rank you."
Wife: "I'm your wife. No you don't."

She gave us perhaps the best acting performance in the film, although it only lasted two minutes.

I thought the initial fight scene was realistic the way the bullets pinged off of rocks. Then later in the film they opt to use fake looking CG flames coming out of the rifles. The bolt action rifle was shot as a semi automatic- nice touch. The script, while simple and predictable, needed to be more clever. The shallow attempts at humor didn't make it.

WARNING: This film is also marketed under the title "Battle Recon: The Call to Duty." You might watch it twice!

PARENTAL GUIDE: The bad news is that there are no f-bombs, sex, or nudity so the kids can watch it. Subtitles use the "A" word and "penis."

1.0 out of 5 stars I can't believe I rented this piece of crap movie! August 19, 2012
Format:Amazon Instant Video
Red Box should not allow such low budget, low grade movie in their machines. I was amazed at the low quality of actors and all "Professionals" involved in the making of this movie. It was a piece of junk script performed by very poor actors and directed by someone who needed to have a military advisor on the set. I could not force myself to finish watching this terrible film.

A decent movie with a cohesive story line. Not the best movie in this genre, but it's good for a slow weekend.
