5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Concise Description of the Battle of Five Forks with a Great Fold Out Map, November 25, 2009
By
This review is from: Battle of Five Forks (The Virginia Civil War Battles and Leaders Series) (Hardcover)
This book is part of the famous VA. series of blue books and you have two of the best possible authors on the subject. Ed Bearss, the former Chief Historian of the National Park Service and incredible tour guide, and Chris calkins the superintendent of the Petersburg Battlefield National Park. Outstanding and concise detaill on the battle of Five Forks with references to the Battle of Dinwiddie Court House, whose victory probably gave General Pickett a false sense of confidence since he was virtually incapacitated (Shad Bake) during the initial battle action until the final collapse. Covers well the conflict and misinformation between General Sheridans and Warren resulting in Warren being sacked. Excellent, although primitive, fold out map shows the entire battle field operations including Warren's wayward division that got him into trouble and the map identifies each notable unit's position. Well done book and it really helps to read the book before visiting this critical yet obscure battlefield. Note that the national park service has been upgrading the primitive site to make it a more suitable field visit.
