Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 4-6-- Well-organized books with attractive formats present information on two of the most emotionally charged battles in U. S. history. Both texts are lucid and straightforward, giving background on key individuals involved, but the point-by-point description of the conflict is clearer in Last Stand at the Alamo than in Gettysburg . Additionally, the problem in Gettysburg is exacerbated by a lack of clarity in the labeling of the maps showing troop movements, and by the actual mislabeling of Union troops as Confederate in one instance. The map of the U. S. in Last Stand is also flawed; a large area is shown in color-coding that does not appear in the key. Aside from these rather minor problems, both books benefit from open layouts, generous use of white space, and well-placed, full-color period photos and/or paintings, and maps. Both John Jakes's Susanna of the Alamo (Gulliver, 1986) and Robert Penn Warren's Remember the Alamo! (Random, 1963) give similar information, but are aimed at younger and older age groups respectively. MacKinlay Kantor's Gettysburg (Random, 1963) provides a more narrative approach to the battle. Neil Johnson's The Battle of Gettysburg (Four Winds, 1989) is the edition of choice. Nonetheless, given both readability and specificity, Carter's titles provide solid report sources. --Ann Welton, University Child Development School, Seattle
