About the Author

Marvin D. Veronee was born in Charleston, S.C. in 1923. When the draft was extended to include 18 year olds, he enlisted in the Navy’s V-7 program in November 1942. Upon graduation from UNC in August 1943, he was called up and entered Midshipman’s School at Notre Dame University.

He received a commision as an ensign (a "ninety days wonder")After short time aboard an APA, he was ordered to San Diego to attend naval gunfire school at the Amphibious Training Base. In August 1944, he was assigned to the Fifth Marine Division as a naval-gunfire liaison officeer.

In September, the division sailed for Hawaii to prepare for the upcoming invasion of Iwo Jima. After further training in Pearl Harbor and at Camp Tarawa, Hawaii, the division sailed in January 1945 to invade and conquer the island fortress of Iwo Jima. Ensign Veronee served with the 1st battalion 28th Marines throughout thirty-six days until the end of the operation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating story, November 17, 2004

This review is from: The Battle of Iwo Jima (Paperback)
This book vividly depicts the Battle of Iwo Jima from the perspective of a forward artillery officer who was in the battle. It combines detailed research with witty stories and sober recounting of the struggle of the battle. This is a very rare perspective on a widely read topic. It was very interesting to see the story behind the famous flag picture and Iwo Jima memorial.
