5.0 out of 5 stars Indispensable book
This book is indispensable for anyone (scholars and amateurs alike)trying to understand the complex relationships of history, myth, identity and nationalism in the Balkans. By providing the little known Albanian mythical perspective on the real event of the Kosovo battle of 1389 it informs the modern debate on Kosovo and Albanian-Serb relations in a way that few books do.

1.0 out of 5 stars What a waste of my time
The fictional story presented in this book could be published on 'The Onion' as well. However, I think the story would hardly pass 'The Onion's publishing standards since they tend to have stories that have at least something related to reality.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fiction, but not SF - Its called propaganda or order a book, April 10, 2010
This review is from: The Battle of Kosovo 1389: An Albanian Epic (Hardcover)
At the time of Kosovo battle,

it was a field of battle and not that much settled territory,

where the Serbian Church was founded.

Milos is not Albanian (aka Kosovar) name

Obilic is Serbian sername.

Battle was fought between Serbian and Bosnian knights and the Ottoman Empire.

At the best, Albanians could be infantry on one or both sides.

Its Turkish victory, but both Turks and Serbs suffered great losses, included

the leaders and so Turks reatreated to decide who is the next Sultan.

Serbs have builded the EPIC of this battle,

but now I see Albanians do the same mistake.

But they even change the history.

Just like I have heard that Serbian monatasteries are Dardanian-Byzanth style

on the web site of the Ministry of culture of Kosovo.

Lies do not help, they just make this author look stupid,

as well as very well known publisher.

Shame on you both!

And before you buy it, at least check historical accounts.

(...)

Also, I believe Serbian diaspora will

stop buying the books of both author and publisher

and keep them blamed for such an ignorant book.

there is a way to change history, but this is just

like DERETIC JOVAN in Serbian.

Someones high ego and stupidness.

For that, she shall be punished by the law,

and morally sanctioned. Shame on her!

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable read!, July 16, 2009
This review is from: The Battle of Kosovo 1389: An Albanian Epic (Hardcover)
A truly enjoyable read. This book's contribution is two-fold; apart from documenting a little-know Albanian version of the myth of the

Battle of Kosovo, the songs and the essay open up the space for debate

about competing narratives in a region that has never argued

peacefully about its past. The book confirms that nothing is set in

stone and by doing so it advises the new generations in the Balkans to

strive for plurality of voices and opinions as their truth is often

not the only one.

5.0 out of 5 stars First true critical work on 1389, October 8, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Battle of Kosovo 1389: An Albanian Epic (Hardcover)
Disregard the low comments of propaganda. They haven't moved past the title even. The book in fact ventures to posit a very interesting point, besides being the very first of it's kind, that is a critical work regarding the myth formations not only of this battle but also different Serbian myths all together who have never been critically examined, unlike the Albanian side(see Miranda Vickers and others for more info) who has been studied and critically examined for decades now.

This book however still remains a domain for the American and the most progressive critical readers of the west, not the medieval prep talk that people might get otherwise. It's a book with a very interesting conclusion, making one wonder after all has been examined, what is the big deal of this battle, a battle that not only was lost, but hasn't even been covered by many sources and was tiny as opposed to the uninterrupted one that Scanderbeg for example waged for 25 years at the peak of the Ottoman empire might.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Battle for Kosovo 2009; fighting against Albanian Myths, July 8, 2009
This review is from: The Battle of Kosovo 1389: An Albanian Epic (Hardcover)
This work of science fiction best describes the parallel world that Balkan tribes live in.

In absence of any historical facts that Albanians lived in Kosovo and Metohija before the Ottoman occupation in the 14th century; it's a travesty to copycat the Serbian history and cultural heritage as your own.

What is the great next book coming from Miss De Lillio:

-Alexander the Great; the Great Albanian Legend;

-Marco Polo; the Great Albanian Adventurer

5.0 out of 5 stars The most accurate book, please must read it, July 9, 2009
This review is from: The Battle of Kosovo 1389: An Albanian Epic (Hardcover)
This is the most accurate historical book ever written about the Balkans and medieval Kosovo in particular. Anna di Lellio does not attempt to take sides but rather gives detailed historical evidence, leaving up to the reader to decide which side of the story is more complete.

Indeed, as a reader I find the Albanian side of story as more complete. While the traditional Albanian folk songs and the Albanian people have been remembering this soldier as their national hero for centuries, the Serbian side is merely relied on political edited work written mainly in the 20th century, more precisely in the 80s during the Milosevic era.

1.0 out of 5 stars this book is just a fiction not worth anything, July 7, 2009
This review is from: The Battle of Kosovo 1389: An Albanian Epic (Hardcover)
as we all know this book is a fiction- fairy tale-none history as a university scholar in history this book is based on the man named Milo's obilic which was a Serbian knight that killed the sultan of turkey then he was killed also he is a known Serbian hero and in this book is just showing him in other views this book is not to be taken seriously its a total fiction of history but if you dont mind a book that's not realistic then read it but i would not pay what its asking, to me its not even worth the paper its printed on and the author is not to be taken seriously she is known for her 1 sided stance in anything she writes.if i had a choice i would have given this 0 out of 5.
