America's Greatest Naval Victory...For Younger Readers!,

This review is from: The Battle of Midway: The Destruction of the Japanese Fleet (Graphic Battles of World War II) (Paperback)
Published in 2007, THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY, THE DESTRUCTION OF THE JAPANESE FLEET is part of the 'Graphic Battles of World War II' series put out by Rosen Publishing and Osprey Publishing. Written by Steve White and illustrated by Richard Elson, the book is intended for readers 9-12.
White opens the book with a 5-page introduction to WW II events prior to June 1942 and the opposing forces who fought at Midway. Then White and illustrator Elson recreate this most momentous battle in graphic novel format. As with the PEARL HARBOR volume, the story is accurately told. However, Elson does a better job of illustrating the ships, aircraft, etc. that fought at Midway. (Several panels depict men caught in the midst of fires, explosions, etc. that might be upsetting to readers 9-10). The book concludes with a 2-page summation of events after Midway. If possible, I'd give THE BATTLE OF MIDWAY 4 1/2 stars. The information presented is fairly accurate but the artwork is better done and more eye-catching. Recommended. |
