Format: Paperback
The Battle of Mine Creek, the largest Civil War cavalry battle west of the Mississippi, marked the end of General Sterling Price's ill-fated 1864 Missouri Campaign, the last major military action in the west, and has been an infrequent subject for historians. The last work on the battle was Lumir Buresh's October 25th and the Battle of Mine Creek, published in 1977 and now out-of-print. This book is part of the History Press's campaign to publish a book on seemingly every aspect of the Civil War as part of its Sesquicentenial Series, and it is, unfortunately, one of the weaker efforts.

First, prospective buyers viewing this page are probably under the impression from the description that they are buying a 160 page long book on the Battle of Mine Creek. The book is in fact 127 pages long, and subtracting the pages devoted to endpapers, the table of contents, a brief introduction, acknowledgements, bibliography and index leaves about 105 pages of actual text. About a third of that is devoted to the title battle, the rest being a review of the settlement of Kansas, the pre-war conflicts over statehood, and a summary of Price's 1864 invasion of Missouri.

A brief tale well-told would be worth the effort, but this work, despite Stalnaker's obvious enthusiasm for his subject, is awkwardly written, indifferently edited, and mind-numbingly repetitive, as if the author is working to fill space, or has forgotten what he told us several paragraphs before. Passive voice abounds, as early on we are informed that, "It was decided that General Sterling Price would lead a Confederate army into Missouri." Then we move on. Who decided a move into Missouri was a good idea? Price? General Kirby Smith? Jefferson Davis? A soldier who ascended the Ozarks and returned with two stone tablets?

I do not want to sound mean or hurtful because I do not want to discourage anyone from attempting to advance our understanding of the war in the Trans-Mississippi, but the other reviewer pretty much says it all about this book. It is not a well-done account of the battle. To me the writing seemed amateurish, more and accurate maps are needed, and the long background story needs to be shorten. This book is not one of the better ones in this series. The account of this battle by Lumir F. Buresh "October 25th and the Battle of Mine Creek" is still the standard.

A very interesting book about General Sterling Price's excursion through Missouri and events leading up to the battles of Westport and Mine Creek, and the importance of the battle of Mine Creek in the Confederate champagne.
