I wanted so much more...,

I bought this comic as a leap of faith, no pun intended. After reading The Walking Dead and Invicible (two of my favorite comic book titles) I became a Kirkman fan for life. Battle Pope didn't discourage me from this, but I will not be buying volume 2 and on. I believe it is his first comic and it shows. The humor is not nearly as smart, and the story is not current Kirkman quality. It is interesting as a Krikman fan, but definately not his best - or even his 2nd, 3rd, 4th best... work.

After The Rapture,
By
This review is from: Battle Pope Vol. 1: Genesis (v. 1) (Paperback)
Oswald is the Pope. He claims he is not the most Christian Pope. He drinks, smokes, and sleeps around with the ladies. But things get worse when the Rapture occurs and almost everyone is left behind. The doors of hell have opened and demons poured fourth. After a horrible war a truce was reached. This is the world Oswald now lives in. But there is a problem and God needs a little help from the Pope.
Saint Michael has been captured by Lucifer. If Oswald rescues him he gets a pass into Heaven (his only chance of entry). Oswald is helped with a new build and a sidekick named Jesus Christ. With the forces of hell lined up against him, the Pope must face many hardships and battles. Can a sinning pope and a spaced-out savior stop the plans of Lucifer and save the day? You will have to read the book to find out. This book is just wacky enough to be brilliant. The Pope has some of the best lines I have read in a long time. Crude and smart at the same time with a dash of slapstick. I can see how someone could be offended by the portrayal of certain sacred characters but for those who can put offence aside there is a real fun ride between these covers. Check it out.

Battle Pope is one of the few comics that got me hooked up to! It's hilarious! But of course, you probably have to be not too religious to enjoy this to it's full extent. Great drawings, funny story and characters.

Kirkman fans should give this a try!,

I found Battle Pope: Genesis to be a fun, quick read, well worth the reasonable cover price. Like many, I first became a loyal fan of Robert Kirkman's through his Walking Dead and Invincible comics. Battle Pope is very different from those titles. As you might imagine it is totally over the top! It reminds me of the Lobo comics DC put out in the 1990s....just more extreme! Not for the easily offended! The evolution of Tony Moore's art is interesting to follow and the behind the scenes bits in the sketchbook section were really well done (I usually find that stuff underwhelming at best but they really did a nice job here). The comparisons of the original cover art to the modified covers was nice to see. Also I had no idea Kirkman did layouts on this (or any other) series.

I may be a bit biased because I read the Kirkman's Walking Dead series before starting Battle Pope and became a big fan really fast. The Battle Pope series isn't as good, but it is still definitely worth checking out. Catholics (and all Christians for that matter) be prepared to look down your noses at this humorous take on religion.

Jesus is a hippie!,

Okay, I needed to give this book the credit it deserves. It's fantastic, quirky, and hilarious. This is the book I gave my younger brother to get him into graphic novels. Now he is hooked and has a bigger collection than myself.
It's not a work of classic fiction (like Sandman or Watchmen), but it's not meant to be. It's meant to be fun and silly and humerous. It is! I rank this a "must own" for any good comic book collection. (Note: this is a work of humor and not for the easily offended).

Battle Pope is amazing! Probably not for you religious wackos, but for anyone with a decent sense of humor or any Kirkman fans, this series is a must. The series only gets better as it progresses, as does Kirkman's work in general, and yet, this is still magnificent. If you get offended by people making a mockery of religion, you should probably steer away from this one.

Skip this no matter who you are,

I am a gigantic Robert Kirkman fan, and the content of this book does not really offend me; it's just plain bad. I really enjoy The Walking Dead, and Invincible is maybe my favorite ongoing series. I enjoy Astonishing Wolf-Man, although it is clearly a step down from his two main books. Battle Pope, however, is tripe. Again, the content doesn't offend me, but neither does it entertain me. I think the only people who would enjoy this would be kids who want to feel rebellious by reading all of the "sacrilegious" content. If someone wants to read a comic of real merit that also holds nothing sacred and employs irreverent humor, go with Preacher Vol. 1: Gone to Texas. Battle Pope is not worth anyone's time or money.

truly disgusting,
This review is from: Battle Pope Vol. 1: Genesis (v. 1) (Paperback)
If you love God then you must see this for what it is. this poor lost soul kirkman potrays JESUS as a frail shivering man who hides behind the strong muscular pope? What a joke this is an insult to the Lord God this is not funny and to all who take part in this and say it is innocent i pray for your souls. The Pope is what he is a frail Man and as the Lord Lives all who have insulted the The Father The son and the Holy Ghost will be held accountable. Stay away from this its a trap for your very Soul.
