Yet another battle,
By
This review is from: Battle Rages on (Audio CD)
Deep Purple's mark 2 final effort!Battles rages on deserves the 5 stars for two reasons:some of the songs-Lick it up,Talk about love, Time to kill might be just good and always pleasant to listen to but some other songs like the groovy RAMSHACKLE MAN, SOLITAIRE, ANYA, THE BATTLE RAGES ON, ONE MAN'S MEAT are some the best songs of mark 2 reunion.I really believe this album is as good as PERFECT STRANGERS, it just didn't come out as such a surprise! The second reason why this album deserves 5 stars is probably because being aware of the fact that Blackmore wasn't going to surprise us anymore with DP, he left the band not long after which gave a enormous rebound to DP's carreer and this might not sound like a good reason to buy this album but it is in fact!BATTLE RAGES ON is Blackmore's ultimate legacy to all purple fans and the last notes on this album might be the very last he created for DP and we should really enjoy them!

I don't understand why people don't like this album,

I am a huge Deep Purple fan, and I believe this to be an excellent album. For some reason, most DP fans badmouth this one, as if its somehow inferior or full of "filler." Usually when tons of fans don't like an album, I would tend to agree with them somewhat - or at least admit the album is weaker. I couldn't disagree more. Underrated is the word to describe this album. Its fun, its fast, and Blackmore's riffs and soloing are as good as they've ever been. Gillans vocal performance is excellent too. The riffs to the title track, Lick It Up, Anya, Ramshackle Man, One Man's Meat - how can you not think this is great Deep Purple music? I just don't understand why this one isn't put on par with Perfect Strangers, because I think it is almost as good. The Battle Rages On is the best DP song from the 80s till today - simply a powerful, incredible track.

Deep Purple fans have got to be the most spoiled in the world. For some odd reason, many have badmouthed this album, and yet, from all the reviews (including Amazon), at least half of the songs are loved. Not one, but half a dozen! The title track, Anya, Ramshackle Man, A Twist In The Tale, Nasty Piece Of Work and Solitaire. Also, my favorite, Time To Kill. With so many winners on one album, it really has to be pretty good. Even the "filler" such as "Talk About Love" and "One Man's Meat" are well above average.
The sound quality is solid, a mix between Perfect Strangers and Slaves & Masters; with good musicianship all around. As it turned out, this became the final album of the "classic" mkII lineup, and so that's reason enough to get this album. A solid entry into the amazing Deep Purple catalogue, and still sounding good after ten plus years. 4 1/2 stars. A must, for any Deep Purple fan.

Deep Purple's best post-reunion album,
By
This review is from: Battle Rages on (Audio CD)
This is my favorite of the post-reunion Deep Purple - and it's hard to compare to the 70's days, as it definitely has a more updated, 80's metal sound (although this came out in the 90's - but "90s" metal implies to me power, death/black, grunge, nu-metal, etc. - this is still rock-based, guitar-riffing, metal like Judas Priest, Scorpions, Iron Maiden, etc.) The songs are great, the musicianship is great - you've still got (for the last time) the classic "Machine Head" lineup of Gillan, Glover, Blackmore, Lord, & Paice. If you like classic metal, get it!

Solid Album from Classic Purple Line-up,
By
This review is from: Battle Rages on (Audio CD)
After the disastrous Joe Lynn Turner experiment on "Slaves And Masters" Deep Purple came roaring back on "The Battle Rages On." While Joe Lynn Turner is an excellent singer, he doesn't fit the Deep Purple style nearly as well as Ian Gillan. On TBRO Deep Purple returns to the style of "Perfect Strangers" with great success. A much harder edge prevails throughout the album, but the band sticks to their roots, getting a bit bluesy at times (a good thing), but mainly sticking to straight-ahead rock. Standout tracks include "Nasty Piece of Work," the bluesy "Ramshackle Man," and the blistering title track. Ritchie Blackmore's guitar is much more prevalent than on the previous 2 albums, and the production is crisp and clean. A must-have for any Purple fan.

I love this cd, every song is great. I can't decide which song is my favorite! (All of them) I bought this on cassette when it was released in 1993 and wore the tape out. I'm excited to have it on cd now. The quality of the cd sound is very rich and full, it really fills the room. I just can't say enough about this album! Definatley ranks as one of the top Deep Purple albums for me! I'm a pretty big fan of both Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore, so it goes without saying, I really miss Deep Purple. There will never be any band even close. What a bummer!

The Battle Rages on...,

Band Personnell:
Ian Gillan - Vocals Ritchie Blackmore - Guitars Roger Glover - Bass Ian Paice - Drums Jon Lord - Organs and Keyboards This album should originally be a Mark 5 album, called "The Crattle Grazes on..." but because of the Rainbow style sound Turner was kicked and let Gillan return, they changed the album name and most of the songs, because of this reunion, Blackmore left the band for good under the world tour, he got replaced by Joe Satriani so they could complete it. This is a fine album, the best since "Perfect Strangers".

Not a bad release,

I think some people were a little harsh when reviewing this album. The title track itself is the heaviest I've ever heard Deep Purple, it's has such great guitar-work especially around 3:30 when you hear the "dueling" guitars! "Anya" has a great acoustic opener, then kicks into some fancy vocal and guitar. "Ramshackle Man" is a great blues-sounding track, while "Solitaire" has some very haunting lyrics. "One Man's Meat," is a great song, even through the stupid lyrics. I'm not going to say that this was the best Deep Purple album, because it really wasn't. "Lick it Up" is such a trash song, "Time to Kill" has an awful chorus. The songs that I spoke of kindly really more than make up for the other trash on here. The title track and "Anya" are really worth the money. Give it a try.

the last ritual with Blackmore on guitar,
By A Customer
This review is from: Battle Rages on (Audio CD)
this album is rather slow and narrow,...their hard rock sound is not hard as a rock! Blackmore lacked his skills on this album,...because he has no love and desire anymore to deep Purple,...he left in 1994, his place was took over by Steve Morse. the last ritual testimonial for DP with Blackmore....Anja is an excellent song,...the album track itself is also cool.
