4.0 out of 5 stars My daughter loves these.....
When my daughter first asked for a Weenies book a couple of years ago, I hesitated. She's read all of the Weenies books now and even reads the stories outloud to us. It's great to see books of short stories do so well. These are fun, suspenseful, creepy, and hilarious stories for 3-6 graders. We highly recommend.

2.0 out of 5 stars Questionable endings
Parents should read first and decide whether the short stories are appropriate for their children. They are a bit disturbing, for instance one story ends with a child being blended up and made into a "weenie". While you could say it's "pre Twilight Zone"... I personally don't think a pre 6th grader needs to be thinking of these things.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kids Love It!, December 25, 2009

I use stories to start or end a class. These are great! They are usually 5 pages or less and have a twist to them. I call them the Pre-Teen Twighlight Zone. The kids can't get enough. Recently we have used these stories to write our own. Everyone wants to make their own cool story and we can follow Lubar's model to get started. Another thing the kids like is the section at the back where the author explains where he got the idea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warped, creepy stories for advanced elementary to middle school readers, April 17, 2009
This review is from: The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
Warped, creepy stories for advanced elementary to middle school readers make for a satisfying collection in David Lubar's latest The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies And Other Warped and Creepy Tales. Fans of the previous Weenies collections enjoy a fine pairing of short stories and author insights on inspirations behind them.

4.0 out of 5 stars Think Stephen King for the Younger Crowd, March 5, 2009
This review is from: The Battle of the Red Hot Pepper Weenies: And Other Warped and Creepy Tales (Hardcover)
Within the pages of THE BATTLE OF THE RED HOT PEPPER WEENIES are a number of Stephen King-ish stories that are certain to amuse younger horror/suspense fans. I found myself chuckling along at times and feeling tingles creep up the spine at others.

Standouts from this collection of short stories include:

"Frankendance" tells the tale of a father's quest to create a dream date for his daughter's first school dance.

"What's Eating The Vegans?" is simply hilarious. I know a few vegans, many who feel it should be their way or the highway, and loved this take on Thanksgiving!

"Into the Wild Blue Yonder" is best summed up with a simple EWWWWW.

Finally, the first story in this book, "All The Rage" is an interesting spin on what happens to those who are able to avoid becoming angry.

In all, there are over thirty stories in this collection. Most are only two or three pages long, so children will find it easy to enjoy stories in between tasks. I do warn that I meant to only read a couple stories before getting dinner prepped and wound up finding half an hour had passed.

THE BATTLE OF THE RED HOT WEENIES is highly addictive, completely mesmerizing and definitely one for the keeper shelf!

1.0 out of 5 stars parents may want to read one of these stories before buying, March 10, 2011
Parents -

You may want to read one of these stories before buying this or any of David Lubar's other short story collections for your kids. I thought, judging by the cover, (I should know better), that the stories would be somehow funny. Not so much. They were actually quite disturbing and often horrific and really graphically gruesome.

If your kids can stomach that kind of thing, well, ok I guess. But my 9 year old had trouble sleeping for several nights. I had to get rid of the book.
