I was able to pick this up while free. It is 457 locations on the Battle of Roanoke Island, off the coast of N. Carolina during the Civil War.

The author does a nice job of summing up the political and military problems the Confederacy faced. The Chicamacomico Races seemed to be looking for a Benny Hill soundtrack in my head. The doomed nature of the Confederate resistance is tragic, and compared to the overwhelming material and might prepared by the Union, seemed to sum up the Civil War in a nutshell. I never would have known, without this history, that Roanoke Island was the largest naval invasion by the United States up to that point in time.

The illustrations are a nice touch.

Grab if you have any interest in the Civil War.

Well-researched. Excellent local history by a historian who knows the area. Useful maps and contemporary illustrations. Decent bibliography. This book is a small gem of what was a small, but brief and decisive action.

This is a short well written account of an obscure battle that was won by the North at a time when Union forces were hard pressed to counter Robert E. Lee's forces. It clearly was a battle with far reaching consequences. A well done piece of work.

I love NC history and this book is especially great. It is hard to find information like this book has.

The information is somewhat interesting but extremely hard to follow on a Kindle where you can not clearly or easily see the maps, etc. the author also fails to give you any insight into the characters and why they made some questionable decisions - were they stupid? lazy?
