Battle Royale,
This review is from: Battle Royale Ultimate Edition Volume 2 (v. 2) (Hardcover)
Being a fan of the original book, I really enjoyed the manga because of the great artwork and detail put into it. Reading the manga, you really get a sense of how things happened on the island. If you have ever read the book and enjoyed it this is a must, and SO much better than the movie.

This review is from: Battle Royale Ultimate Edition Volume 2 (v. 2) (Hardcover)
Battle Royale Ultimate Collection Volume One was a tough read for me: it wasn't the violence, but the idea that they were putting 15 year olds in a brutal and sexual light. Maybe it's a cultural thing, but it was weird for me and (judging by the reviews) others as well. Well, Volume Two is the beginning of the payoff--the story really starts paying dividends here. In many ways, once the initial shock is over, you can start enjoying the madcap B-movie "Anyone Can Die At Any Time" premise as well as the artfulness of the manga. Characterizations become more and more compelling in this volume without sacrificing any of the fun. Somehow it all comes together and creates true wonderful graphic literature in a way that I'm not sure I've ever read before and haven't read since. Highly recommended, assuming you made it through the first volume.
