This May 1864 confrontation in the dense thickets of The Wildnerness in Virginia became one of the war's most gruesome battlegrounds. Opposing armies found themselves fighting in the heavy growth of trees and shrubs as the area became a fiery inferno. With movement limited by the dense growth, soldiers were trapped in the blazing fire, thousands perishing in the intense blaze.
