The illustrator Brocal Remohi has worked for decades, his ability to make the action in his drawings come to life with a power all their own. From his native Spain, his multi-national career has given him opportunities to work for America, Japan, and throughout Europe. He s illustrated the adventures of Tarzan, as well as such diverse subjects as Ghandi, the Book of Islam, Lawrence of Arabia, and a history of the Jews. 5.0 out of 5 stars THE SAVAGE PENCIL OF REMOHI, October 27, 2005
This review is from: Battleax - Art of Brocal Remohi (Paperback)
Do you like savage barbarians, busty damsels, and fierce warrior women? Then look no further than Battle Ax: The Savage Art of Brocal Remohi, yet another outstanding fantasy art collection from SQP. The Spanish-born Remohi first made his mark working in European comics and created a number of various barbarian characters including "Arcane", "Ta-Ar" and "Kronan", and yes I'd say the similarity in name to a certain other barbarian is no coincidence. Call him whatever you want, but Remohi illustrates some of the most dramatic and savage barbarians this side of Frazetta, who was an obvious influence. Remohi was one of many European artists recruited by Jim Warren in the 1970's to work on his line of horror magazines including Creepy and Eerie. Remohi passed away in 2002 at the age of 66 but leaves behind a tremendous body of work, part of which is included in this book, including several previously unpublished pieces.

Remohi's works remind me a bit of the work of John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala from Savage Sword of Conan in the 70's but with a more savage edge. One piece shows this off quite well as a wizard sits on a throne in amusement as the hands of a legion of undead burst up through the floor to grab at a startled barbarian. The detail of his work is just astounding.

Another barbarian on horseback, every bit looking like the Conan we know and love, is attacked by a nude woman riding a flying worm with a large, hungry mouth. I love the piece featuring an oriental barbarian plows headlong on horseback into a marauding horde of Samurai warriors. There is a meticulously inked and shaded illustration showing another barbarian about to deliver the deathblow to a reptilian beast.

Besides great barbarians, Remohi also rendered many captivating warrior women who look like they could all hold their own with any male. A lovely blonde vampire lounges on a granite throne as her undead servant stands obediently off to the side...A nude, devil-winged woman rides atop an undead steed armed with a scythe...and a nude warrior queen standing poised with a spear with her pet tiger. In all the book has 64 pages of Remohi's unforgettable black & white illustrations and features color covers. A superior talent!
