Don't hesitate to purchase this game! I've never gotten into a multiplayer game on the PS2 before. Usually, I'm a PC player. However, I've been hooked on Battlefield 2 for the PS2 since I got a demo disk back in June.

Admittedly, I have purchased the PC version, but I've been waiting and waiting for the PS2 version. Why? The controls and movements feel so much more realistic and intuitive with a PS2 controller. At the PC, I felt very disconnected from the play. And for an aging game system, the PS2 gives excellent graphics on this title.

PROS:
- online play is awesome, and with PS2 (unlike Xbox) it's free.
- you can taste the dirt, this game is so real. Even for a beginning player, you will start to learn military tactics and fighting.
- headset and voice communications are clear
- well-designed maps give the player true variety. Buildings and hiding nooks are well placed and thought out. This makes sniping and covert ops even more enjoyable.
- weapons are all great, and each unit is nicely balanced.

CONS:
- if you played the demo, you'll surely mourn the loss of extra C4 ammo (player only has 4 of them now), the grenade launcher has been toned down, and the rocket launcher seems stronger. These changes aren't enough to throw the game out of balance, but people are grumbling.
- game still needs some balancing issues with vehicles and aircraft. A talented player can use the vehicles to overwhelm a newbie team.
- slow load time. However, this is not specific to Battlefield. It's an aging system, and all games load slowly.

BUY THIS TITLE!

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't expect a lot from this game., November 2, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
I am currently playing the game and here's my first impression:

WARNING:
If you are looking for a tactical shooter, this is not the game to buy. This is an arcade game.
If you are looking for a console version of Battlefield, this is not the game to buy. The game mechanics are different.

PROS:
1) Good graphics.
2) Good maps. Large and lots of hiding places (you can go into almost every building).
3) Hot swap feature (you can switch to any friendly unit on the fly). Since AI is quite dumb (charge to their deaths) the same with all battlefield games, this feature will help in positioning them correctly.
4) Helicopers are actually flyable compared to the previous battlefield titles.
5) Mission-based. This is good for those bored with conquest / control point type maps.
6) Story line. Well, you can see the realities of war. You play both sides and both of you think you're the good guys but in reality both of you are the bad guys.

CONS:
1) Not realistic. Too arcade.
2) Slow stance changing. Crounching and going to prone is slow so don't bother. Just run around like crazy and dodge the bullets.
3) Lack of skirmish mode. I miss the conquest maps.
4) Unlimited ammo. Once your stock runs out, it will automatically replenish in 30 seconds or so. I missed the medicine cabinets and ammo crates.

Haven't played online though.

Missions are quite easy so there's no frustration factor even for amature gamers. Some may find this boring. But even the more experienced ones will be challenged as perfecting the missions
are really difficult. Performance is scored by these criteria:

1) Points (gain points depending on the number of enemies you kill and they way you kill them, large penalty of 5000 points when you die)
2) Time (fulfil the objectives in the least amount of time)
3) Deaths (this is actually penalty, the more times you die, the less your score)

And most of the time, you'll be playing flimsy infantry so you die quickly and slow vehicles so you die quickly as well (anti-tank infantry is so lethal that it will kill a tank in 2 shots). So the replay factor here is great if you aim to gain higher and higher points. Easier said than done. But if you're the type who just want's to play a game in one pass, then this game will have a short life span.

CLOSING COMMENTS:
So if you want a tactical shooter, pick up SOCOM
If you want a conquest game for the console, pick up Star Wars Battlefront.
This game is at a class of its own.

So far, I'll give this a 3 for it's arcade feel but a 5 for the FUN factor and the UNIQUE game mechanics.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent online play - actually game is so-so, January 25, 2006

I would definately recommend this game to anyone...especially if you have capable online play. I would play all night if i could, on the online play as you go through rankings. The vehicles are way fun and easy to use
The regular game is not nearly as fun once you play online and its really easy. This is the first war game i've ever had and i have finished missions with great ease (the controls are easy to remember). Also, it kind of cheap, I was by myself hiding behind a car and ran into the middle of the road to shoot some other hiders(about 10) and i only got hit once or twice every 10 or so seconds and trust me, that is a long time. In ten seconds you could kill about 3 people with enough ammo.
The online play is more realistic and sniping is SO much fun.
anywayz i recommend this to most gamers except hard-core war gamers.

4.0 out of 5 stars This game gets better the more I play it, December 22, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
OK this is another one of those FPS games that I like (rated killzone as a good one as well)...but not at first.

I was happy as a clam to hear that BF2 was coming out for PS2 as well as computer. Being a BF1942 fan and the mode Desert Combat, I knew the game was going to be good since DC moders were involved. However my 'puter is old so I couldn't get the PC version.

Well I got the game for PS2 and was immediately disappointed. For one, there was no normal capture the spawn points for single player. It was all story-basd game. As others have said....it's battlefield! So I was turned off by that aspect. The next thing was that you couldn't adjust the button formation. Very upsetting for being a left-hander (which I am). So the first night I simply sulked.

But instead of simply returning it, I decided to play it for a few days. I adjusted to the right-handed button formation slowly. Also I started using the hotswap option more and more (FYI this is something rather cool in squad-based single player games. Yuo can switch with any friendly unit you see. Thereby taking control of that model and their weapons. I expect alot of EA FPS to have this in the future). I grew to like the game.

What is really nice is the idea of bullets will kill you. Two to three rounds of an assault rifle will kill you as well as a single sniper shoot. Shocking, I know...especially if you are used to getting blasted for 10 seconds before death like most other FPS games have. Also, as pointed out, dying becomes a penalty. It effects your points in the mission and your over all rank scoring. The game challenges you to think before acting.....Is it worth diving into that crowd of enemy units because if you die.....you lose more than they are worth. Or do you hotswap to the sniper on the hill and take them out that way....OR do you hotswap to the helo to blow the village to kingdom come.

The ranking is neat and somewhat complex. At it's basic, level you have a star ranking with correlates with a military rank...the more starts, the higher you are ranked ranging from PFC to 4 star general. The stars are determined by a mixture of points (which is given through enemy deaths and mission objectives accomplished and lost through dying), time (the less time the more stars), hotswapping (what they call teamwork), and dying means losing stars ( yes you get double wammied in dying). Also there are metals that you obtain for skills within a class of soldier (one of five; assault, support, engineer, sniper, special ops). This shows you what your strengths and weaknesses are within each class and helps you track your progress of experience in each.

Pros:
-Hotswap (seriously the best way to swtich between classes, IMHO)
-ranking system (effects replaying...the same way we loved to shoot the same Space Invaders over and over again to get a better score)
-graphics (pretty cool)
-missions (pretty realistic...I mean come on one is a recon mission in a helo....take pictures and leave..sounds easy doesn't it? hehehehehe)
-Have to play a certain number of classes on each mission. You are limited to say...engineers and assault for one mission or snipers the next. It forces you to be multi-talented and not have just one class favorite to play.

Cons:
-Can not alter button formation (lefties and personalized players are OOL)
-Not the same as the PC version. If you never played BF1942...don't worry about this. If you have, expect something totally different.
-Must earn different classes....you have to go through missions to open up the classes which is sort of annoying...yes I know it's in the pro section but it is also a con since I do have a favorite class.

Five stars for fun but four for overall...lefties have feelings too. :(

First of all, this game is very fun. The action is incredible. A lot of weapons. You get to play as the Americans, British, or the Chinese. Every level is very decent with lots of shooting. You get to drive helicopters, boats, tanks, trucks, and lots of other stuff I can't remember right now. You don't have to drive the trucks though you can either sit in the passenger seat and shoot your own gun, or you can get on the back of the truck and shoot the machine gun. Their are four different types of troops. The snipers, really fun. The special ops. The support (machine gunners). And the infantry. This whole game is very fun. You can even go up the ranks from Private to General. This will be a favorite among war and action shooters. I give it 5 stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Decent, July 25, 2007

This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
If you're getting an online shooter for your kid, go with this. There's no real strategy needed in the multiplayer, and the community will be a lot better than say, SOCOM's on a little kid. The whole game is too easy. Too easy to get kills, too easy to die, too easy to fly helicopters, too easy to find your opponents. There is no stealth in this game. You have a giant red dot over your head to any enemy near you, and the same of them. This feature destroys any strategy that could've been involved. In an effort to balance the power of various troop kits, snipers were given tracer rounds which (combined with the red dot) guarantee their death as soon as they shoot a competent player. The game is also plagued by glitchers and team-killers (amazingly, the server doesn't kick teamkillers until a score of -30; even terrible players who misplace a massive artillery strike will only get to half that without intentionally killing teammates). Network errors preventing the creation of rooms or disconnecting players are not unheard of.

All in all, it's a decent game--but it has glaring flaws which seriously hinder gameplay. Get it for the kids, but seasoned gamers should go with the latest installment of SOCOM (especially if they value stealth).

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Game, December 27, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
Battlefield 2 is a fun game to play. I owned it once before and lost it before I got very far into the storyline, so finding it on here was an immedeate must buy. For those interested in a more tactical game, this is probably not the best purchase, as it feels fairly arcade, but this does not take away from the game play.

Game is based not on mission completion, but rather on your overall performance in a missio, and th ecumulative score you get from your playing. These points, as well as a few other factors (how well you utilize teammates, speed of your mission, and total losses) add up to your rank. You also earn more weapons and upgrades to them as you go along.

In the play of the game you are able to drive or pilot multipule land, air, and sea based vehicles, allowing for many avenues of attack. You also are able to swap between four different classes of troop, each with a differnt array of weapons.

This is a game that you wont get bored with!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Battlefield Yet! Loved this game so much!, July 11, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
This game had huge multiplayer maps for being on playstation 2 and for being multiplayer. A bridge to far in my opionion is a classic map, This game is super fun combined with vehicles, helicopters, tanks, jeeps, you name it. What i admired most about this game was the way you and the enemies spawn so far away, unlike call of duty where you turn the corner and there is an enemy.

The maps are planned very well and varie and are very fun. The helicopters can be used to get on roofs, buildings, billboards, etc...

The way the game plays is also super fun. Graphics are very good as well. If my ps3 could play this i would still be playing it today. W0W, buy this!

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and did I mention awesome, June 11, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
This game was just what I was looking for and more when I got it. It was wonderful to a eleven year old because it still had all the pumped up action gamer loves and had a lower rating than most good shooters so mom and dad are ok with it. The only sorrow I got from this game was the frustration of the incretible hardness of the last two levels. So get this game so you will be like :) instead of :(

5.0 out of 5 stars Best online FPS to date., February 26, 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Battlefield 2 Modern Combat (Video Game)
For those who have played this game since its release, it's no contest that this game has the best online FPS play in competition between COD and Halo. This game does not have a marvelous campaign, although I like it, the online 12 vs 12 combat is superb! The online community surpasses any online game past and present and the team work/communication is off the wall. I played this game on Xbox Live from release until April 15, 2010, when they terminated all original XBL games. I am now playing it on PS2, thanks to Amazon.
WARNING, because of the efforts by EA to shut this game down and encourage people to buy new games to profit their company, new gamer tag creation (which is required to play online) has been terminated. In order to play online, you have to either already have a working tag or find someone willing to send you their information. I was able to buy this game and a working gamertag from a seller here on Amazon.
Fun and happy hunting!
